Has anyone tried "mindfulness" and got it to work?

I cannot seem to get the hang of mindfulness. I never seem to be able to bring up a positive image in my mind. I can do the deep breathing, which I do find helpful.

Hi. Gray. Now this is interesting. One of the basic practices in Buddhism is Mindfulness. The principle behind it is that we are not aware of the now but, in our minds, we live in the past or future. When you cleaned your teeth this morning were you cleaning your teeth or thinking about what you were going to have for dinner? When you drive are you driving or are your thoughts elsewhere? In Mindfulness we concentrate on the here and now; with the fact that there is ONLY the NOW. The past is gone, the future never comes because every passing moment is the future. The Buddhists say (and I make no excuses for a religious comment), "When you walk, walk; When you sit, sit, but do not wobble". The 'wobble' are the extraneous thoughts unrelated to the present moment. This is not easy, but it has prevented a lot of people tipping over the edge into anxiety. This is coupled with the Buddhist practise of meditation which, as you say, involves deep breathing. Regards. jonathan.

Thanks. Are you able to explain exactly how you got it to work for yourself?

Hi. Gray. Well, to be honest I don't think I have! One can only attempt these things. We do not live in Buddhist monasteries where peace reigns and one can concentrate on ones own welfare. But I do try and understand what is meant by Mindfulness and it does help at times to just get a glimpse of it. Nothing to stop you trying though. You may be one of those exceptional people that can harness this method to your own good. Blessings. jonathan.

Hi, years ago i attended a course in a monastery, which was fantastic, but as johnathan indicates its so hard to keep up when you return to the hustle bustle of life......It is good to have "me" time (first thing in the morning and evening is good when you are not disturbed)....as it is easier with someone to help...such as a course.....As mentioned it is about living in the present moment...a good book..not to heavy ,would be "the power of now" by Eckhart Tolle.........constant practice is also essential ! I wish you well it is a very powerful exercise which with a lot of practice can change your life.....

I had ME time today, i was a tad agitated and was just a horror to my fella, so i took myself off to bed and watched Queen in concert on dvd, i was engrossed in the music that i didnt think of anything else, on the odd occasion my mind wandered off but i brought it back to the music

I too was taught about 'mindfulness' and find it difficult to achieve so 'Jonathan' has got it right by saying that part of the experience is to attempt it.

Also in Philosophy classes we talked about what it means to be 'mindful' and ask are you a mindful person? Who around you is?

To help focus or if you get negative thoughts say " I am not THAT" and veer towards something positive. THAT being whatever disturbs you and makes you feel negative - you're NOT that. ;) I need some of this now!

"The power of now" by Eckhart Tolle was recommended in our meetings - maybe I should 'buy now.' :) thanks for the recommendation.

Interesting, Poppy. There is a school of thought that says "There is anger, but "I" am not angry. There is despair but "I" is not in despair". In a way it sort of detaches us from the event; anger; despair. Obviously, it does not work for everyone but I have found the idea useful.

Best wishes. jonathan.
