thinking of taking 5-htp,has anyone tried ... - Anxiety Support
thinking of taking 5-htp,has anyone tried it.is it safe to take, and what are the side effects..??
Never heard of this Miarose? What is it? x
Hi. miarose. Yes, so would I. Interesting!. jonathan.
Its supposed to be good for anxiety and depression, not sure whats in it,but its a natural product....of course the doctors would rather me taking antidepressants, but I can't tolerate the side effects,I do need something to take the edge off my symptoms, and I believe this can be bought over the counter in certain health shops,so Jonathan and ellabella mayby we could google it and find out more..if any of you find out anything please let me know..
Hi. miarose. It appears that this product is an Amino Acid. It is supposed to increase levels of Serotonin, to suppress appetite and help sleep. It seems odd to me that Antidepressants are supposed to DECREASE the levels of Serotonin while this increases them. I would suggest that before anyone takes them while in an anxiety state, that they consult their GP or other health adviser. Personally, I would not go on to them. Our chemistry in the anxiety state is too dodgy to mess around with... Love and best wishes. jonathan.
hi Jonathan, thanks for your reply,I always thought antidepressants increased levels of Serotonin in the brain, not decreased it,Imay be wrong, have to investigate it..think I will find out more before taking them, have to be sure exactly what im taking, and how their going to effect me...
MiaRose, you are correct. SSRI antidepressants DO increase the levels of serotonin in the brain. The wikipedia page about SSRI's gives a good explanation of how they work. Although they are designed for treating depression, they are also used for other disorders such as panic, anxiety and even for migraine and pain management.
As for 5-HTP, I think you can't be on it at the same time as an SSRI, as it does much the same thing, so you would be getting double the effect.
I have heard really good things about the use of 5-HTP, but only for depression, not for anxiety. Then again, many of us find our anxiety worsens at times of depression, so maybe you can look into it further and once satisfied of the safety (or otherwise) of this supplement you will be informed enough to decide whether to try it.
Thank you funkychcken for taking the time to reply to me,I am amazed that so few people knows about 5-htp,I am not taking antidepressants, but I do feel a bit down with this constant anxiety,xx
7days since i have half my mirtizipine from 15 mg to 7.5 feel veryanxiety and sick can any one help me
hi joane, these are side effects of lowering your medication, where you told to lower it,if not mayby if you went back on 15mg,(witch is a low dose)all this would go away,I had the same problem coming off tolvon, was very dizzy, had nausea, and took panic attacks, tolvon and mirtizipine are much the same meds, hope you feel better soon,it will take another few weeks for your body to adjust to the lower dose..xxxx
