has anyone ever taken ammytriptalyn? and what did you take it for?
Hi Sam, amitriptyline (is this what you mean) is prescribed for depression as a rule, didn't know it was still a drug of choice as it's one of the old tricyclics I recall there being a concern about it worsening depression and suicidal thoughts and self harming in it's initial stages, it's also used in pain management I think. But in answer to your question I haven't taken it but in the past I've given it out many a time.
Just to add Sam, as antidepressants go it was pretty effective.
thanks, im being offered it for tmj pain......does that make sence? im on prozac for anxiety and depression and dont want to dabble in to much med. are you a doctor?
Hi Sam sorry for the delay. No I was an RMN but I know it is used in pain management. I assume whoever is prescribing it is aware you are on an antidepressant already...? If you have any concerns speak to your GP they may be able to reassure you, I'm sure you're aware that taking more than one antidepressant is not that uncommon.
HI Sam, over three years ago i was hit by headaches that GP gave me those pills, he said they are stress headaches, i took them for a year and did not read any reviews and researched them, that was a big mistake, stayed on them for a year and i think they gave me my panics after i stopped them, add to that the stress i was dealing with on a daily basis. it turn up that the pills are old and a lot of private doctors stopped using them, they made my life living nightmare, i became different person, my personality changed, i was very very angry person, i was shouting on people all the time, gained over 2 stones, well my headaches stopped but they messed up my brain big time. since then i swore that i will always research everything and i will not take any tablets for depression or anxiety, therefore when GP suggested that i take pills for my symptoms i refused and till now i am dealing with it without pills.
i hope this helped
xx
Hi - I have taken Clomipramine, from the same group of TCA's as Amitriptyline, I'm not sure how similar they are in terms of side-effects, but I didn't tolerate it well at all and had to come off it. I was given it for depression. I switched to an SSRI instead which was much more effective. I've also know people given this drug for migraines and pain management.
Hi - I've been on it many years ago. It's considered an 'old' drug, but it's still used, because it is effective for many people. The modern types of anti-depressants don't work well for a lot of people (me included), because they can give you the motivation to do your suicide. But the 'old' tricyclics like amitriptyline work in a different way - plus they are used for anxiety in depression as well. The side effects are different to the modern drugs and it's worthwhile looking us 'anti-depressants' on wikipedia for an overview that is very useful.
Clomipramine that funkychicken mentions is much more powerful than amitrip!
