Anxiety i think?

Hello, I am 22 years old now and new to this group. I just wanted reassurance on anxiety symptoms. I have this weird obsession with anything that causes me to feel uncomfortable physically and mentally (headaches/nauseous/muscle spasm/pains etc.) makes me want to research and end up diagnosing myself with various conditions or diseases. I had my first panic attack almost 2 years ago and it was the worse feeling ever. I woke up sweating and uncontrollably shaking with my heart literally beating out of my chest. My family rushed me to the ER and I was seen by a cardiologist and everything came back normal. They did prescribe meds such as beta blockers, sertraline to help me sleep and Xanax to calm my nerves. I never depended on them in fact, I still hold the containers more than half full somewhere in my cabinet. I always wanted to try something therapeutic and natural. I've learned to deal with symptoms since then. I do tend to get a bit nervous for road trips, an exam, or work related things, which i know is quite common for lots of people. Since then i have managed to do so quite well up until recently. My dad suffered a heart attack and my anxiety symptoms came back. He's fine now and better. I do wish I could gain some sort of reassurance that everything in my life is good and I am more than blessed for everyone and everything surrounding me. Any tips?

I do want to point out that i recently experienced a bubbly feeling on the right side of my chest.. any idea what might cause that?

Hello Anon, write down all your symptoms, get checked out by a doc. Tell the doc these symptoms, let them make the diagnosis for you. If you are fine physically...then 'yes', what you are feeling is probably anxiety or panic. This probably includes the bubbly feeling. I have suffered through health anxiety years ago...I googled every symptom. After lots of tests with nothing found, I came to the realization (took me long enough) that it was stress/anxiety/panic attacks. So now, I get a check up every year to make sure I'm still in good health, and whatever happens, I accept it. And with this and mindfulness meditation, I have managed to keep the anxiety to a minimal...and you can too! Good luck.

It sounds like you’ve done a lot of research and want to fix this which is great news. Google is great but can throw up results that make you feel worse so the doctor should be your first contact to discuss issues. Like you, I was put on Sertraline to deal with anxiety and , for me, my concern over cvd and the 3 stents I now have. I came off it after one month as it was making me feel worse, nightmares etc. I read a book called ‘Lost connections’ by Johann Hari which I felt useful as it discussed anxiety and our dependence on drugs to fix us.

What has helped for me is to positively manage my concerns. This means I now eat healthily, I do exercise every day, make an effort to mix with family and friends, and do something pleasurable (I have taken up yoga and learning to play the piano)

I also had a few months with iTalk.com where you work through your anxiety and they help you develop techniques such as ‘Worry time’ and differentiating between practical and hypothetical worries etc. Give it a try! Reach out for support (as you have done here), face up to your concerns, and start managing them. There is a lot of great support out there and your anxiety should reduce if you do something positive.

Good Luck 🙂
