Weaned off Citalopram and Started taking mirtazapine 2 nights ago as citalopram wasn’t really helping with my anxiety and not sleeping. Doctor said mirtazapine should help with both the anxiety/panic attacks and help me sleep. So far, it makes me super sleepy yet restless, toss and turn for a few hours before I drift off to sleep. Last night, awoke from a vivid nightmare and within minutes I had uncontrollable shaking/tremors/jerking movements which lasted approx 20 mins. Has anyone else experienced this?
I have sought medical advice from a doctor/pharmacist but would like to know if others have experienced this and how long it lasted.
Thanks.

Hello, I take mirtazapine on a night too, I have a constant hand tremor do you? I’m sure it’s the tablet! I’m a barber too so it’s embarrassing I just tell people I’ve had nothing to eat haha! I’ve had slight jerking movements before now but only slight and not for 20 minutes, if it happens again I’d maybe talk to your doctor or whoever prescribed them. Hope that was helpful in some way x
Maybe it’s from the weaning from one to the other rather than the mirtazapine itself?
It made me super sleepy in the beginning. A couple of nights I woke up and thought I was gonna black out. After week or two the sleepy feeling got loads better. I’ve been taking it 3 months and although I find it hard to wake up in the morning, I’m more energetic than I was before I started taking them x
When I first started taking them I could not keep my eyes open they almost fully sedated me but only for the first three days of so, I was immensely sleep deprived too so they were a godsend at first! X
I tried Mirtazapine, worked fine for me, though everyone reacts differently. Didn't help with sleeping though. My doctor took me off because I was gaining weight. But WoW sounds like this isn't good for you? You need to go to your doctor and change it?
Yes I did he said it was normal because your body is getting used to going off one and getting on the other scared the crap out of me thought and went to the Er
I called 111 for advice and they called an ambulance. Yes the pharmacist said same thing, but the doctor said it was a panic attack however I have those daily and they are nothing like that. Thanks for the reply
Couldn't it be a slight form of tardive dyskinesia? Its a known sideeffect of anti psycotics and i believe also from anti depressants. It can happen from withdrawel but also when starting new meds as far as i know.
I used to take Mirtazipine, thank God I been off for almost 3 months but on day 4 when I was taking it, I had those tremor feelings in my head. I guess people call it brain zaps and I still experience it here and there but it’s not as intense as it was when I was on it..
Dear RBC, although I did not have these symptoms, my mirtazapine stopped giving me a restful sleep recently, after 17 years. Back to panic attacks & heavy fatigue. Taking benzos again! Horrible, yes. But the mirtazapine should adjust for you. I take my with the simple sleep antidepressant trazodone. It was a good combo for me. Just hope I get back into whack sonner rather than later. Hope you feel better, dear.
Thanks all. I halved the dose as recommended by pharmacist which seems to have helped, no more tremors and better nights sleep. Will gradually build back up to prescribed dosage.
