Why do we get thoughts we don’t want when we’re anxious or upset

I’ve been kinda down the past few days if anyone follows my posts. But for some reason I keep thinking about this song that was on the day my grandmother died in 2007. It’s like I’m not thinking about her but subconsciously maybe my anxiety or depressed feeling keeps bringing up things ? Anyone else ever get these random thoughts or memories ?

Constantly - but there can be good news in this situation. My therapist explained to me that the hippocampus (where memories are stored) shrinks when anxious or depressed for a long time. When we start to heal, it comes back online - thus, memories float up. Have you been active in your healing lately? That could be why this memory is surfacing.

I felt really good for a while and now all of a sudden it starts. Like this morning I was an emotional mess, and now tonight I’m anxious. I’m bloated, my chest is kinda tight and I feel it in my back I have indigestion too. I hate anxiety it scares me a lot. I feel very uncomfortable right at the moment.

I hate those feelings so much! Breathe, take a bath or a shower or go for a walk... it will pass. Sounds like you have some feelings that are trying to get your attention.

It’s weird. Yes. Actually I have been feeling a lot better lately like really in the groove and then all of a sudden this crap started. I just have this weird feeling like the switch flipped in my head, and it makes me nervous and I’m so concentrated on that and don’t wanna feel it. I know it only makes things worse worrying and I’m trying but I know

jmerrick22, you are not alone with when dealing with memories of loved ones pasted on. Try focusing on the good moments. Have you talked to a family member or friend. I feel that it helps me when I think of mine. Hugs to you my friend. :)
