I’m still on citalopram and feelings loads better than I was 4 months ago but the chest pains just really get me down as I just think about heart attacks and dying 😟 any advice on coping with these please x

Have you been to the doctor and has he/she addressed your chest pain? Not sure about your health condition or age but if this is a new issue it's best to get examined as soon as possible. If it's something that's been addressed and the doctor said it wasn't cardiac related, it could be chest wall pain, I have a chronic form of this. Basically the connective tissue between the ribs gets inflamed and if you press down on various parts of my chest it really hurts, then I know it's not my heart. Deep breathing exercises like guided meditation have helped me a lot, sometimes even listening to music. Hope you're feeling better and get checked out if you haven't already.

Anxiety impacts on the whole body and in particular can cause muscle pain and soreness due to you always being in a tense state - fight or flight. This can cause chest pain. Constant anxiety can also lead to shallow breathing which can eventually cause chest pain. If you’ve been checked out by your GP I wouldn’t worry too much - hard I know. Try massage and muscle relaxation exercises regularly - YouTube have some good videos for this.

Depression can also make any pain feel worse.

Hope this helps.

Hello Caits..,it's possible you have Costocondritis....inflammation of the ribs...maybe you overdid things even some time ago..,it does take a long time to get better....I've got it right now through packing things into boxes to move......does it hurt if you press your ribs under your arms about 4inches down ? If so, then there is your answer....just rest, rests rest.....and maybe rub in some .feldene or similar gel.

If it was your heart it would NOT HURT when you pressed down, so put that out of your mind.

Hope this helps.

Try taking an antacid. Anxiety will cause this. My chest hurts 24/7. You may want to try an as needed anxiety pill. I take Ararax or Valium depending how bad. If no relief from that it’s better to be safe than sorry. You could try an aspirin too. If you’ve had the whole work up recently try to find comfort in your proofs. Your negative test results for heart problems. The more you worry the worse it will get. You’d be surprised but anxiety causes antacid. It affects every part of our body systems and often mimics very serious problems. How cruel is that!? I don’t know your history and have not examined you so if you can’t rule it out with other means like antacid, Tylenol, aspirin, short acting as needed anxiety med or even a relaxing bubble bath or exercise or activity (idle minds breed negativity and anxiety) it is always better to be safe than sorry. Try to redirect your thoughts as hard as that may be. Even reading or something. Just be safe about it.

If you're concerned about your chest pains - I mean in terms of physical issues - see your GP or even go to A&E. It sounds extreme but it might well put your mind at rest. If you're on citalopram I guess you've already seen your GP. Anxiety can make you feel all manner or wierd things. I've been there and to some extent I still deal with it. But the important thing is to rule out any other issues if you're really worried. Not knowing is propbaby making things worse. In all probability what you;re feeling is anxiety issues alone - but if you;re on citalopram and they're still bad - se your GP again. A lot of Brits are hesitant about 'bothering the doctor' - but that's what they're there for.
