Always feeling shortness of breathe. I recently had X-rays done for my chest and lungs and they said It was normal but yet I still feel like I can't really breathe. Especially when I smell any type of smoke it gets really bad. or when I wakeup in the morning to my chest and lungs feel like there burning. Does anyone get this as well?

Hi MrK00, the fact that you have been checked out and the results are normal for your chest and lungs, I would say it's most likely coming from your anxiety. When anxious we tend to shallow breathe or hold our breath. Both can cause that shortness of breath feeling. When I smell smoke or paint odors, I immediately go into holding my breath because I don't want to inhale the toxic fumes. We hold our breath and we get short winded. I think what you may feel in the morning upon awakening is a tightness in your chest (not lungs) that give the sensation of burning. As if you have been working out.

The answer in turning this problem around is learning proper deep breathing. Practice makes perfect so that you don't even have to think about it. Your body will automatically "deep breathe" you through the day and night, allowing you to feel more at peace and calm as well as eliminating the shortness of breath feeling. YouTube has some excellent deep breathing techniques that they will talk you through. Practice daily and don't wait until you need it. Good Luck and feel better, more in control. x

This could be the reason yeah, but just sometimes when I get angry or upset as well it feels like I can't breathe. I can't even cry too that's how hard it is to breathe but I guess it could just be my anxiety.

Chest wall muscles get so tight that they can feel constricting as well as the muscles in the diaphragm unable to expand completely due to stress.

Always see your doctor if it continues to be a problem to check for allergies, asthma etc.

what your experiencing is acid reflux. Try some antacids or liquid gaviscon. see if that helps

I agree Whatnext, that acid reflux can very well cause that burning especially from lying down flat all night. Thanks for bringing that up. I didn't think of it. xx

Yeah I'm taking some medication for that. It's been 9days I been on it but still. The medication isn't really helping

You may have acid reflux. I do, and Zantac or Mylanta helps. Also, there is a type of asthma that is triggered by certain odors. I have that too. I can't breathe at all around cigarette smoke. I can literally smell it (and stop breathing) almost a mile away. I'm like a dog like that. Lol So, yeah, you should ask your doctor about those possible causes, unless they have already been ruled out. And good luck.
