Every so often when I am relaxed in my chair after dinner, my heart feels like it stops and then starts up again with a jerk. ... In atrial fibrillation, the top parts of the heart (the atria) are beating erratically and very fast much faster than the usual once-a-second of the normal heartbeat this is what i exactly feel i got this from google but i could be laying down all of sudden feels like my heart paused for a sec then makes me jerk or jump up and cough and starts beating fast again ehat could this reaaly be?

hey wassup everyone !!
A fib would have shown up on your heart tests. My mom has it and even when her heart is "behaving", markers of it will show on her EKG. Look up vagus nerve stimulation. It's normal for heart palpitations to intensify after eating. The vagus nerve runs beside the stomach so when you eat and your stomach is full, it rubs against it. Google can explain it better than I can.
Hi Johnnie, first of all Happy New Year!
Are you asking if this could be A-Fib that you are experiencing? Your doctor would be able to tell you with a simple EKG. I have it myself but you are just speculating that it is a possibility according to google. If it is, there is medication to control that erratic beat and you will never feel it again. Set up an appointment with a cardiologist or your GP and get the answer. Never Google
happy new year agroa1 and yeah im asking because i can be relax with out doing nothing and all of sudden feels like it pauses for a sec i dont know if it exactly does that but it makes me jump or jerk basically but cough right after i keep thinking about cardiac arrest stuff like that it just scary when it happens because people think im coughing but it makes me jump and cough the way it beat or pause i dont know exactly what it is but i know its wierd
You know Johnnie, just plain old anxiety will make the heart do that just from the overflow of adrenaline. I use to experience that long ago, the same symptoms as you and everyone else on the forum. The way it makes us jump or cough, it's just a reflex symptom of what your nerves are doing. The more we worry and get anxious about it, the longer it lasts.
A-Fib is something different. It sounds like you are more likely experiencing anxiety and it's the over sensitized nervous system causing you to jump or jerk forward. You are not about to go into cardiac arrest believe me. You are young and have that going for you. When did you last see your doctor?
a long time ago like 5 months ago going to see him again the 10th lf this month but thats the cardiologist
That's perfect Johnnie in that it's the cardiologist you will see. Explain to him what you are feeling and that you are worried about A-Fib. It can be heard through the stethoscope. I hope he reassures you so you can stop worrying.
right now its still happening its making me jump and cough like something is wrong im a little worried cuzz im layingdown
Try going to YouTube and listen to a Relaxtion/DeepBreathinig tape. This will lower your anxiety level, calm your breathing, your heart and your mind. It will relax your nervous system.
Take a listen to Guided Meditation by Michael Seeley

why does it keep doing that im a bit neevous its keeps going back to back when it happens my heart speeds up it jumps and make me cough like it stops then beats again thats how i feel
Did you drink this past New Year's? Did you have a lot of caffeine today? Johnnie so many things play into why our hearts react as they do. Anxiety is just one effect.
If you are that concerned tonight and feel it is different or lasting longer, you know we always recommend that you call your doctor or go to the ER. You know your body best and need to make the decision if nothing else helps you. Stay safe..
no i just been sick lately and havent eat nothing like that but you know what they say when you sick your heart beats faster but it feels like its making me cough and jump up like its about to stop its a crazy feeling
If you have an empty stomach, the air in your stomach from being empty can push against the heart causing the irregular beats. I still say since we are not doctors, give your doctor a call. I think that may relieve your anxiety over this.
If you have a antianxiety med, the doctor may suggest you take one. Let me know what you decide to do.
