I have noticed that after meeting with friends and possible talking animatedly that my blood pressure rises quite steeply. I suffer from anxiety and wondered if anyone else suffers like this and whether possible the two were connected.

High blood pressure after talking
philippa1412, Oh do I understand this one. Talking (which I love to do) can be my own worse enemy. I am very animated when I talk. People just sit back and listen calmly as my pressure keeps rising the more I talk. And that's even on the phone... I tend to get so excited when talking that I talk fast and catch myself holding my breath. We are talking high numbers both top and bottom of pressure. After relaxing it would come back down. But still.....
Without b/p meds I would get so bad, I'd feel as if a blackness were coming over me. More so from holding my breath while talking. Even on medication, those talking times would still break through the meds but just not as bad.
You sound like a Type A personality, a people person, a person who likes to please others and it all contributes into us feeling so hyper when we speak. Now what I do is, listen more so that during that time of listening, I am able to take a step back and do some deep breathing. I speak slower which helps immensely.
So yes philippa1412, the two are connected (high blood pressure and talking) and you are not alone. xx
Just curious..how high does your blood pressure go?..last night i was home watching tv and felt kind of dizzy and legs hurting..checked my bp and it was 170/110..never happened before..went to hospital but it went down-_-
are random blood pressure spikes that bad?
i have doctors appointment today..is it best to take blood pressure meds for random blood pressure spikes?..
Thanks
Ahuesca, mine would go that high as well. And yes, they are random spikes which makes it difficult to always diagnose. They say as long as it doesn't stay that high, it's anxiety and not harmful.
I was like that for many years before the doctor decided to put me on b/p meds. I will tell you this, even on medication it can break through but just not that high anymore. I feel better having that protection of the medication. Of course it doesn't hurt by using meditation and deep breathing to help control our emotions as well as medication.
Let me know what your doctor decides. He knows what is best for you according too your health history. Good Luck xx
Thanks for your reply!!
Yeah im the same way..i rather have that protection of meds..would that mean it would be long term or just temporarily till stress and anxiety is reduced..
my blood pressure has been ranging from 120-130 systolic 80-88 diastolic
my random recent spikes in blood has raised my anxiety levels to the roof now because i work in a warehouse lifting and moving heavy stuff so now im just trying to avoid doind my job thinking it will blast my blood pressure to the point of no return
btw question..wat are your thoughts of anxiety meds..i have NEVER taken any meds..but anxiety has hit me in its worst where its affecting the people around me..wat are your thoghts on anxiety meds vs trying to battle it naturally
my biggest worries has been the side effects and gettong of the meds if im constantly taking them
yes ill keep updates
Your normal b/p readings are within range as to what happens when you are lifting and moving heavy stuff, I'm not sure. I mean it is expected to go up naturally when working hard. Run that by your doctor if he doesn't already know what your workday is like.
As for anxiety medication, I was on a low dose for years just to get me through each day. When they no longer worked, I was switched to something else w/o any benefits. That's when I decided to wean off completely. So yes, there is a time and a place that it may be necessary to start out with medication as well as therapy until you can learn other methods and techniques in working naturally to quiet anxiety.
I do daily meditation and deep breathing. which for me does a better job than the meds did at the end because my breathing is controlled by me and it's with me anytime I need to quiet my mind and body down. It works...
See what your doctor has to say...whether he puts you on medication or not, it is never too soon to learn and practice a daily method of calming your mind. My best to you, xx
Agora 1 Do you use any special meditation program or just your own? I’ve been doing HeadSpace for about eighteen months and really like it.
Speechpat, I've heard of Head Space but have never tried it I use a tape a psychologist gave me a long time ago which does it for me each and every time.
It's a relaxation, imagery as well as self hypnosis tape by Bob Griswald. I respond immediately to his voice and his suggestions. Whatever works I guess x
Once it went to 200/100. But it’s never been that high. I’m struggling with meds due to spikes but at least it brings it down quicker but sometimes too low. Good luck with your appointment.
Thank you so much for that. I’m trying to slow down but not thought of deep breathing whilst listening. I guess now I know what’s going on it’s making me panic now which sends it up higher. It’s difficult as gp put me on meds as was so high in surgery but quite often during my quiet times the meds take it down too low. I’m wondering if anxiety meds may be better in the short term. Thanks again
See ifyou can wear a 24hr heart monitor to have them see the spyies first hand
I have noticed that if I spend time in front of a PC screen and then take my bp it is on the high side. Haven't checked whether that's the case with a mobile or tablet.
