Hi Jennifer234

To reduce your anxiety before, during, and after a dental appointment, be confident about your dental treatment going well.

Reducing dental anxiety can really reduce your pain threshold and lead to greater trust of your dental care providers, and a more positive outlook toward dentistry as a whole. Importantly, tell the dentist of your anxiety and what you would like to do control it while in the chair.

Your choices to reduce anxiety include noise canceling headphones, distraction through relaxation music, a warm blanket, mental imaging, breathing exercises, to name a few.

Hi jennifer234, last year around this same time, I had several teeth extracted by an oral surgeon, in his office under local anesthetic. If you will be getting a local, be sure to ask for Plain Novocain, w/o Epinephrine,. It's the epinephrine that agitates the heart beat and can give us anxiety.

I always bring my headphones and relaxation tape with. As well as use deep breathing. I didn't even have time to use the headphones, the teeth were out within moments. No one likes going to the dentist, but I think you will be fine. I needed no pain meds after, the stiches dissolve by themselves and within a couple days I was back to eating regular foods.

Let us know the day and time of your appointment and we will all think of you at the same time giving you the confidence that you are not alone :) Good Luck Jennifer, You'll be okay. You've got this one :) xx

You are right about using novocain without epinephrine. My doctor told me to Never allow epinephrine and to have the dentist put it in writing at the top of my chart.

Yes b1b1b1, it's on the front of my chart as well. For the life of me, I can't think of what's it's called. It has saved me many anxious moments in the chair. xx

Agora1 my MD explained that epinephrine is not a problem as long as it does not enter your bloodstream. It can easily enter the bloodstream, however, and then it causes extremely rapid heartbeats. It happened to me once and was frightening.

b1b1b1, Oh I'm glad you wrote back. You are absolutely correct about how epinephrine can affect our heart rate. I thought of the name of the anesthetic on my chart CARBO in big bold letters.

Because of my sensitivity to epinephrine, I stay away from all OTC cold remedies which most seem to have. :) x

I do exactly the same with regard to cold remedies, and for the same reason. I think they can also raise your blood pressure.
