Hurricane Harvey Update

Houston, Texas and the surrounding communities have received >51 inches of rain since Harvey made landfall last Friday, Aug. 25, 2017. Our communities have been devasted with flooded homes, streets, and mass evacuations. Several deaths have been reported. Harvey has finally moved on but is now lashing Texas towns with pounding rain as it heads towards Louisiana. Our entire house flooded for the 1st time but It was minor compared to what other people lost. I've been trying to stay positive; understandably everyone is stressed; now I'm getting anxious. Rescuers and volunteers from out of town have been wonderful, working tirelessly to find and save people. My 73 year old neighbor is depressed because this is the 3rd time her house has flooded in the Last 3 years. My 83 year old neighbor's house has also flooded 3 times in the last 3 years. Repair companies are swamped with calls and the waiting list for repairs is growing. I'm thankful that we are safe, electricity is available and clean water is flowing from the faucet but everything is so overwhelming right now.

CSusan, I am thankful that you are safe. You seemed to have found an inner strength that is pulling you through despite your anxiety. If anything positive has come out of this disaster, it's knowing that there are a lot of good people in this world willing to work tirelessly to be there for one another. Susan, stay positive and stay safe. Thank you for the update. x

Thank you Agora1. One of our young neighbors came by and offered to get a group of friends to help pull up our damp carpet tomorrow! So excited!!

So sweet! Thank you! A crew of 25-30 young, strong volunteers showed up yesterday to remove heavy damp carpet from the entire house!! We have so much "stuff" including lots of heavy furniture but the crew completed the entire job in ~1 1/2 hours. Since there were so many volunteers, some helped 2 other neighbors remove debris and wet carpeting from their homes! One of our neighbors grilled tacos and fed the volunteers during the last 2 days! We are so appreciative for everyone's help and support! I'm checking on my elderly neighbors; one of them is depressed and has regrets about not selling her house a couple of years ago. The sun came out yesterday and birds are singing! Life continues; I'm not feeling overly anxious right now. The house is a mess and we're tired but we're doing okay. Mindfulness reminds us to accept things as they are and not how we want them to be. It's going to be a beautiful day in Houston!!
