Anxiety with IBS

Anyone on here suffer from anxiety from their IBS. I've suffered with anxiety for years. I tried meds citilopram for a few months for IBS but came off them. I went back to drs last year to go back on them and only took two and had really extreme side effects so much so the dr wanted me to take Diazepam 🙈needless to say I refused. So I followed that up with talking therapies - 6 sessions. The therapist stopped after 4 as she said I was doing well and she'd never laughed so much with a client. The thing is I've tried hypnotherapy, tapping technique and I'm still so worried about going out. It's upset holiday plans. I can't fly and can't go on trains and car journeys are a nightmare worrying if I'm stuck in traffic and need the toilet. I'm currently reading Dare by Barry McDonagh and also listening to Headspace meditations. I'm so fed up of my world seeming to be getting smaller and smaller. Any thoughts or messages would be gratefully received as I'm at the end of my tether😕

You should try Magnesium oil as it isn't ingested and by passes the guy so no laxative effect. It will calm your IBS and your anxiety, not sure if you've already tried it ?. Plenty of positive posts on the web. Ancient minerals is the best one if you decide to give it a go.

Hi I'm in the same boat I can have a good few weeks then back to square one again. As soon as the IBS flares up so does my anxiety it's hell!! I'm still in process to trying new things. Trying a probiotic tablet each day before my evening meal lots of people seem to recommend probiotics too early to say if it's helping so far. I do find ginger and peppermint teas good for settling the stomach. I've read DARE and can also recommend Anxiety Panicking about Panic by Justin Fletcher. Am also on week 2 of an 8 week Mindfullness meditation audiobook recommended by NICE which I'm enjoying. I normally go to meditation class once a week but the teacher is on holiday so thought I'd start my own stuff at home. Working on your breathing is really important so would def recommend meditation. X

Hi Nicki1984 thanks for your reply. I'm in a bad place atm. I've cancelled an eye check as I'm worried of going and feel a complete failure for giving in to my anxiety. It makes you so miserable doesn't it and I know the fact that I can't go abroad or train journeys ( worried about having to go to the toilet etc) it's affecting everyone around me. Well that's how I feel. I listen to Headspace meditation which is v calming. Just fed up of giving in. 🙈😓

Have you tried taking Imodium before you go out to give you peace of mind. I managed a holiday abroad this year and would of struggled without it x

Yes I do take Imodium and it does help. The thing is I think that I don't necessarily need Imodium as I'm not as bad as other people with the ibs d. I then take Imodium to give me the peace of mind and then suffer from constipation for the next 3 days as well as stomach aches and cramps. I sound a complete mess really don't I ? 🙈 I would love to be able to go on holiday abroad and on trains etc. I don't know what's worse now ibs or anxiety. One has rolled into the other now x

Not at all - you sound just like me!! It's a shame doctors don't really know much about it or how to treat it. Have you tried any probiotics? X

What probiotics have you tried or are you taking? And are you on any other meds? I've got colofac which was meberevine. That seems to help slightly but still suffer from pain. I've tried the dairy free acidophilus tabs years ago but not taken anything recently x

Just started a boots branded one called digestive support it's lactose and gluten free. I take mebeverine but the chemist seem to switch to colfac every now and again. Sometimes buscopan helps and sometimes rennie deflatine. I was doing really well for a few weeks but then had a bad week of anxiety and the IBS came back it's taking a while to settle down this time so thought I'd give the probiotics a go x

Might try the acidophilus if these boots ones are no good x

I suffer a little bit but mostly gluten allergy. What has helped me is less gluten and also ginger in the morning.

Probiotics are huge as well and my GI doctor put me on medication.

I have started eating about half a cup of 2% Greek yogurt with a small amount of Muesli and blueberries. It seems to have helped quite a bit.

I hate the term IBS. It's what doctors diagnose you when they don't know what it is because we still don't fully understand the gut.

I had years of really bad stomach issues and anxiety.

Some of us hold stress in our stomachs , others in our backs.

You need to take pro biotic every day and cut right down on sugar drinks and cakes etc. You need to build up good bacteria in your gut as right now it will be unbalanced and making your anxiety worse.

We need a healthy gut so it can produce the chemicals we need to fight stress.

You need to get pro biotic with the rights strains that your gut needs. These ones do the job: revital.co.uk/optibac-for-d...

Also try and work out where the stress and anxiety comes from. It could be a current situation or something that happened in the past. Or you're worried about the future. Could be anything.
