Dizzy Spells, I need advice.

I get these Dizzy spells every 3 months or so. I will usually wake up with it, and that's when I feel the worst. I usually have to hold onto the wall for several minutes and breath deep. Then the dizziness lasts for several hours or the rest of the day and is worse when I look up or to the sides, I will get waves of it but no spinning sensation and feel foggy all day. I have had anxiety and panic for my entire life and sense I have explained symptoms to doctors and been given blank stares and no ideas as to what it could be I am turning to the internet. In my opinion it could be a combination of anxiety/stress/low blood sugar/or maybe blood pressure - I am on beta blockers too as well. I have had this for about two years, and it had disappeared for an entire year but has now returned. Has anyone else had this experience before?

Have you noticed that it happens around that time of the month? I do get occasional dizzy spells around that time of the month. It could also be a bit of vertigo, you may turn funny in your sleep and set of the vertigo. Another thing it may be is low iron. Or it could simply be due to anxiety, since it happens occasionally I wouldn't worry too much, there is a medication for dizziness and vertigo called stematil (i think thats how it is spelt) your doctor can prescribe it.

Thank you for replying! I had heard that Vertigo was a spinning sensation and I wouldn't really describe it that way, I can walk and function other then being incredibly anxious about it but maybe that is it.

I also don't get my period because I take the pill continuously to avoid migraines.

Anxiety makes everything worse and certainly dizziness is a common anxiety symptom. However I. Wonder if you may have benign positional vertigo. A not uncommon condition which is helped by doing the epley manoeuvre.

The manoeuvre makes you dizzy but helps resolve the condition.

From the symptoms I have read I don't think I do. It clears up within a day, and I can walk and generally function without problem issue. I also don't get the spinning sensation, it's more waves of dizziness...

I often feel like I'm on a boat or a jolt like an earthquake. I've had cardiac work ups but they finally found a vestibular weakness which causes disequilibrium, which is very different from vertigo. Still no luck finding a reason why, though....

I've had balance/dizziness issues for around 5 or 6 years. Partly I think it's tension in neck affecting balance mechanism, but I was finally referred to ENT and diagnosed with BPPV. AS other comment says, harmless condition where crystals in the middle ear have become dislodged. The crystals then are free to move about in the canal, sending false signals to the brain and cause vertigo/balance problem. The balance system depends on signals to the brain from the ears, eyes and physical receptors (where you are positioned). If any of these sensory areas are not functioning properly, the brain gets confused. I had the Epley maneouver done, 5 weeks ago, (to reposition the crystals) at the ENT department, followed by daily compensation exercises, which help the brain to re-adjust to the signals from the ear (was only on my left side). I had another visit to ENT this week and the Epleys repeated. I wasn't spinning, when walking/moving, but lifting my head up, down or suddenly, would throw my balance off. I have to continue rehabilitation exercises. It's a condition that is easy to check for. Might be worthwhile being checked.

veganese, it's a real condition that can really throw anxiety up for grabs.

I'm glad you have gotten it addressed. Continued success in rehabilitation exercises.

Thank you. Yes. I feel I would have recovered from anxiety, sooner, had it not been for this additional issue. Understanding the nature of symptoms goes a long way to change your mindset.
