Does anyone ever hold their breath a lot to try to figure out what their heart is doing?

Not for that reason but I do find myself subconciously holding my breath

Trying why you would do that.?

Your body will force you to breathe out after about thirty seconds.

Why not check your pulse you will feel the blood rushing down and around your body.

All the best

I don't do it on purpose. Since I have palps and bad anxiety it has caused me to do that for years. I don't know how to count with my pulse or what it is i am looking for exactly!

If you are happy doing what you do now carry on. If you need assistance when things become problematic discuss with your GP
