best medication for panic attacks and anxiety? Appointment tomorrow

I’m back at the doctors tomorrow and I want to be able to go in and ask specifically for a medication that will actually help me. I am really struggling at the minute with anxiety and have had panic attacks that have been awful

I take 20mg fluoxetine every morn

50 mg quetiapine xl every night (previously for they thought I had bipolar, but now saying adhd so I’m on the referral list)

I’ve been confused whether my blood sugar has been low or I’m having panic attacks also even though the dr said my last bloods do not show diabetes.

since having health worries my anxiety is just awful at the minute.

Please can some one recommend a good anxiety medication to take alongside my fluoxetine?

I do also have blood pressure which is on the low side

thanks so much. I would love to hear about what medications or even natural remedies have worked and haven’t worked for you

klonopin works great for my anxiety but as far as an add on to your antidepressant, you’ll have to talk to doc about that. I’m on pristiq and lamictal and that seems to be working enough. Just started the pristiq about 3months ago

Thankyou! Can you just take the Klonopin when you feel an attack coming on? So like maybe not every day just as and when needed? X

That is correct. And it works very quickly for me. A lifesaver!

I’m no doctor but it just really depends on the person. Everyone has different reactions to different things. I’ve never been on 2 different ones at the same time but the one that made me as far as feel the best was cymbalta. But it was the hardest to get off of too. Lexapro is a milder one it just really made me mellow . I’ve been on several through out my life. Some people I know take Zoloft and it’s a more milder one like Lexapro. Be careful mixing medications. The doctors won’t tell you what not to mix together . You will have to research yourself. I stopped all my medications about 7’months ago. Trying to give gut and liver etc a break in all of it. But I hope you find answers. I’m praying you will. Take care and don’t give up ok.

Xanax works very well for me as needed, but trying to get it is another story!🙄 Luckily my doctor prescribes 30 a month for me, but I never take one a day. Just during extra stressful times. I have found that no natural remedies work for me. I've tried SO many. Good luck in finding something that works for you!

Thankyou! With Xanax is there no withdrawal if you just take it when you need it? If you take it will it send you straight to sleep or make you feel groggy in the morning?

Also if you had a glass of wine at the weekend would you be able to take it the day after ?

Thankyou! I just want to know everything before asking for it x

When I take it, it can make me feel tired. But if my stress levels are through the roof, then it will just calm me down. There are no withdrawal symptoms. It doesn't affect me negatively if I take it a day after I have had a few drinks.

I take Xanax as needed, exercising really helped, & realizing that everyone has their own problems,…. Some you wouldn’t trade for, so be a good person & enjoy the little things !

I did my test through Genesight and was so thankful that I found out which antidepressants and some medications work better for my DNA type. Ask your provider if they have pharmacogenomics testing which is just a saliva test in office. If not you can call Genesight form requesting yourself. I found it worth the money to find out which medication worked for me.

"Genetic testing for antidepressants, also known as pharmacogenomics, can help identify how a person's body may metabolize and respond to a specific drug. The test can help clinicians narrow down antidepressant options and identify which medications may be more or less likely to be effective or cause side effects."

Thanks for sharing your experience with Genesight! It’s great to hear that the test helped you find the right medications for you. I’ll definitely look into it and see if my provider offers pharmacogenomics testing. It sounds like a valuable tool!

Glad to have helped. I had to find out about this test from an old friend that needed to find out what worked for her. It was an epiphany and I don't know why I didn't learn this from my previous providers. It would have saved a lot of grief and trouble.

I also have found Klonopin (Clonazepam) to be best for all major anxiety issues. I would take the lowest dose possible. I take 0.125 mg occasionally for sleep. For a significant anxiety/panic I take 0.375 mg. These small doses work for me. Also, trazodone may work as an add-on to your SSRI, 25mg in morning with SSRI may work but you may feel fatigue for a few weeks at first. If you can take meds at night that would probably be best. Ask your doc of course, but I found taking less and going slow helps with side effects. That's all I know. Good luck.

Everyone reacts differently to medication so it's hard to say what will work for you.. For me I am presently on Buspar, which is taken daily and is not fast acting, and the occasional Ativan. Ativan alone was not working so I asked to be put back on Buspar, which I had been on many years ago. Since I've been back on it I rarely need my Ativan.
