hi, my name is Tom, I’m 63 years old and had my first major depressive episode in 2000. I spent a couple weeks inpatient and then intensive outpatient for 6 weeks. The depression is accompanied by anxiety. I’ve tried so many different medications it’s not funny. The side effects were bad enough I had to stop all but the one I take now. What prompted me to join this group is that when I’m ill, I talk myself into the illness being depression. I have a virus at the moment and am so afraid it’s a major depressive episode coming even though Dr’s have assured me it’s a virus.

hello
Hi, I am sorry you aren't feeling well. I have depression, too. It's nice to feel down and have it be from not being physically well. That means in a few days you will be feeling much better! Try not to worry. Divert yourself with TV or music on YouTube. I like American Indian flute music. It's very relaxing. For some reason, most relaxing music makes me nervous! Get something comforting tea or mug of decaf coffee and know things will be a little better real soon! Hang I there!!🙂
hi Tom
My name is Debbie I can’t imagine how you feel. I have a panic/anxiety disorder and am really struggling at the moment.
Welcome Tom. I am also 63, but a female. I have suffered from both depression, but more recently anxiety most of my life. Depression and anxiety go hand in hand. Like you, I couldn't tolerate the side effects of medications, so I now take only trazodone to help me sleep. Cognitive behavioral therapy, or talk therapy has really helped me with depression and anxiety. It took me a long time to learn to retrain my brain and I can't say I'm perfect at it. I would take care of yourself until you get over the virus. If depressing thoughts come, just tell yourself it's because you're not feeling well and that they will go away when you're better. This group is really helpful if you're looking for ideas to help combat depression and anxiety.
welcome Tom! There are many amazing people here for you! And a plenitude of excellent research and information here as well. Sorry you are going through this virus. I agree it’s very difficult to retrain our brains but so worth it. I have realized retraining my brain is like building any other muscles in my body that have not used. It takes time and consistency that makes the difference for my quality of life but it works and gets a bit easier. I Hate getting sick and have to remember it is for a short time and soon I will feel better. I find that it takes me longer now to recover from a cold or virus. Gone are the days it only lasted a day or two. I’m not too sure if that’s bc of my immunity or the types of viruses we battle now. Be your best nurse to yourself and do all things that make you feel better as you wait it out!
An illness (virus) can make you feel depressed but is usually temporary. If you were mentally fine when it hit, you should be fine when you get well. How are you doing now?
