I can understand hesitation there. It’s a good idea to check with others but it’s hard to tell how it will affect different people. How are you feeling tonight?
Changing meds or starting new ones are always scary. My first anti depressant was Prozac for post partum depression. Six months and I kicked it. SSRI's tend to give me loose bowels and that was the only draw back that I saw. It took time to kick in but once it did, things were much much better. Again, that's my chemistry. I am trying Cymbalta now and have stuck with it for a year, but nothing. I tend to do better on the older antidepressants. For longer term depression, I was on the old trycilic acid antidepressants and I found them to work the best for to treat the depression. All I can say is if you have a suicidal thought, call the crisis line. Like you said, you are depressed. Since the medication takes time to work, that may actually be the harder part.
Everyone responds differently to meds as you know. Getting opinions from your friends is ok but keep in mind your chemistry is very unique.
I was trialed on many meds until we found the right ones. I think one of the biggest things is you need to give them time. Also, pay close attention to your response if something doesn't feel right call your doctor,
Many people don't want to go the med root, Take a look at your quality of life and if you feel you aren't where you want to be it may be worth giving it a shot.
Hi Autumn65.. starting a new med can be a difficult task for some people like me. But weighing on the benefits it has I have to go for it ignoring the possible side effects. My first antidepressant was Lexapro, and it caused side effects initially for 3-4 weeks, and then it showed wonderful benefits. my advice would be to try the med for a few days and then decide whether to continue or change to a new one.
Hi Autumn65,Your doctor has prescribed the medication 💊 based on your medical history and their clinical skills.
As others have pointed out, our chemistries are so different between people. There is nothing to predict if and when you will feel the benefit or even any side effects.
Medication on its own may not be enough to shift your depression so you might be prescribed therapy as an add on to your treatment plan.
The final decision rests with you. Your doctor has done their job in recommending the meds.
I took Prozac for over a decade and it did work tremendously. My doctor told me its been prescribed for decades and is safe. It worked wonders for me. It did take about 2 weeks to feel better so make sure you give it time to kick in. I hope you will start to take it.
Everyone reacts differently to meds based on our body chemistry. Prozac has been a safe and effective drug for many for decades. I was on it shortly after it came out in the late 80's and it worked great for me for about 10 years. I don't even think I had any side effects. Keep in mind it can take a few weeks to notice a difference.
unfortunately that is a side effect of all anti depressant medications. It is more common in young adults....but it is a problem for all....some meds work for some...others don't....your doctor obviously feels that this medication will benefit you....have to try it.....also you know how to reach out for help.....
First of all, like others have posted, everyone's body reacts differently to medication. I would give it a try to see how it works for you. I took it and ended up going off of it because it made me feel as if I was walking around in a haze all the time. I took it to help reduce my anxiety, not for depression. I will warn you that it was hell going off of it. Maybe things will be easier for you.
Hey! What do you mean it was hell going off? What withdrawals? I have been on it 8 days now and I can't see any benefit so far. I had an episode this evening were I felt very sick and broke out in a cold sweat almost made me feel panicked. 🤔 And I have been so tired, with a headache everyday.
Sorry for the delay in my reply. I felt anxious and overall "unwell" while going off of it. Most people will tell you to stick with a medication for a month or two in order to see how you really feel on it. I stuck with it for six months or more before deciding that it wasn't worth it to take it.
Well so far its only been about 2 weeks for me and I'm not impressed lol. It has helped some of my friends so much. I'm gonna give it a month if I don't see any improvement I won't be taking it anymore.
