hi I am Jacqueline I suffer from depression and anxiety and mood swings I don’t know what to do with my dogs as they don’t seem to be very good at the house training so I have a dog door to go in and out the house and I can’t get them to use it I don’t know what to do. Jacqueline

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I' m sorry, I don't have any advice re your dogs ( only got a naughty bunny 🙂) but there are lots of dog owners on here so I'm sure someone will be able to give you some ideas.

Welcome

I would imagine it's consistent training? Using treats on the other side of the door to get them to come out?

Some breeds are so stubborn. What kind of dogs do you have?

I have chihuahuas but one wants attention from me all the time so she has been making her territory and she is jealous of my other dogs and I don’t know how to deal with it

That's alot. I only had one dog so I can't imagine multiples with different personalities. It will be nice when you can get them all using the door. A bit of freedom there.

I'm looking forward to the advice from others.

Hi Jacqueline Sorry to hear about your problem with your dogs.

They need to be trained to use the door door and do their business outside.

Start by bribing them outside with treats, praise them if they go outside and rewars them with treats.

If they poop in the house, remove it and put it somewhere in the garden... this will attract the others to mark their territory. Rinse and repeat, rewarding with treats if they toilet outside.

Hope that helps

Amanda

Stand one side of the door with the dogs the other. Open the flap and show them a treat. Call one of your dogs. When they come through the flap give them a treat. You may have to repeat this several times for them to understand but they will get it. Its like a child that's scared to open a door - you need to give them encouragement and praise.Getting cross or angry with them gives them mixed messages because they still get attention. If they mess in the home don't say anything - put them straight outside and watch them and give them lots of praise when they do their business outside.

I wish I could use a dog door. I have a pitty and two cats. Two want out, one wants in, two wants, repeat all day long. And a set of stairs with each trip. I don't have a fence so any critter could travel in. I could put a collar on my dog but not the cats. So I'm the keeper of the door!🫤

I used treats on both sides to train them to use the dog door. Definitely had to be patient and it was just a fe try’s through the day. My puppy followed my other dog out and learned so that also helped. Sometimes the door mechanism or flap can scare them so it’s getting them very comfortable that it won’t hurt them. I hope they discover and can use the dog door soon!

Oh! I haven't seen him. I have heard of the programme but never watched it. I'm really a cat person but dogs are good.

Hi he's brilliant! Don't know if this is still on.

One of my friends has a huge white husky type dog with wolf in him and whenever he sees me he gets on his hind legs and hugs and kisses me. No-one knows why he does this, and he's being discouraged, but I've met one or two dogs who think they know me. One ran down the road to me, and his owner asked whether I knew the dog, but I was only visiting. I do send out welcoming vibes to animals. "This cat won't sit on the lap of someone he doesn't know" - Yeah, just watch.
