Trying to improve social anxiety

This is my second post to this site. My therapist believes this will help my social anxiety. I tend to have a hard time talking to people online and in person.

So far this site seems pretty helpful. I'm hoping to improve to a point where i'm more comfortable chatting online and in person. So far this site seems like it will be helpful.

Welcome. You are in a great place to connect with other people who have anxiety too. It really helps to know that you aren't alone. If you are active in the posts and replies you will be able to connect with others. Just share what you are comfortable sharing or reply on someone else's post to have something to talk about. What would make it easier to connect with someone? How can I help support you?

Hello. I also suffer from social anxiety. It just keeps getting worse. I also have anxiety to post online. It works like this for me. If I know I have to go out, I can't sleep for a night or two before. I count every minute as the time comes to leave. I walk out the door and then usually I'm fine and back to the old me. I wish you all the luck I can on getting to your goals.

This is a helpful and welcoming site, as you have seen. I don't have much to offer, but I have noticed some things. Some things about words, and perhaps in therapy, you have done some reframing, so you'll know what I'm talking about when I say the words we use in our self-talk goes to our subconscious, which is a powerful part of you and me. You talk about trying. That suggests that you do not expect to get beyond trying. You say you're trying to improve social anxiety. I don't think that's what you mean, but your subconscious doesn't know that. Think about it - improving social anxiety means increasing social anxiety! You could reframe both of these things by not trying but DOING. Keep asking the question "What makes me anxious in ..... situation? Journal it. Keep asking. This is something you are doing, in a positive way. Then "What small thing could I do today that would give me confidence?" "How can I speak to ..... so that I feel more confident, powerful, intelligent - choose your own word. When you notice your self-talk, reframe it in the positive. The trouble with the subconscious is that it doesn't know the difference between true and not true, so whatever you tell it, it takes as the truth. If you say "I am terrible at ....." that's what your subconscious will believe and it will cause you to act out being terrible at whatever it is. Sometimes it means saying something you feel is ludicrous, but that's fine. No-one knows but you - unless they read your journal! 😀

I can see where you're coming from. At this point it is that I'm trying and right now that's the best I can muster up. I've been where you're at and I've said the same things. My time with JM taught me a lot about mental illness and I was always trying to help him. I know how to be positive. I used to be really happy. I've never been good at the "fake it til you make it" way but anything is worth trying. I'm still reeling from the last couple weeks or I would be in a better state of mind and more positive. I'm worried about how much longer I'll have to wait to feel better.

I honestly struggle with the same things, even on this accepting wonderful site I’m reluctant to reply to anything that’s not just face value cause I’m not sure if I’m saying the right thing. I hope this little oasis helps you!
