feeling scared

hello. I’m new here. I was recently discharged from a behavioral hospital after having a mental breakdown. I’m scared of the world now. I feel so fragile. After decades of trying to be strong, one day I just stopped caring. I didn’t want to live. Is anyone here going through the same thing?

Yes, I have been in that place you're in. And it did seem a bit scary leaving the safety and security blanket of the Behavioral Unit. Hopefully they gave you some tools to use once you left (therapist suggestions, medication suggestions) that you can utilize.

Nobody is strong enough to handle their life alone all the time. As human beings we're naturally supposed to relate to others and lean on them. I had a hard time letting go of "having everything under my control" but that is exactly what was affecting my mental health.

I, too, didn't care anymore. About anything. I wasn't living life. I was just existing. But depression medication helped me with those feelings, and another medication helped me with the incessant need to feel like my house had to be spotless, my weight had to be correct, and all those other things which JUST DON'T MATTER in the big picture of life.

Everyone on this chat is here for you. I am here for you, for sure. If you want to discuss some more.

I, too, have been where you are. Please be gentle with yourself. It IS scary being put back out in the world. Everything is so controlled with a set routine inside, so it's difficult to transition. Are there certain aspects of your day from inside the hospital that you can carry into life outside hospital walls? For example, medication schedule, walk schedule, eating scedule, etc.

they did send a medicine schedule and some paperwork on coping skills.

That's good. Are you finding that it's easy to follow?

they are easy to follow but I miss being around the other patients. I live alone.

Maybe you can find some place to volunteer or social groups to join

Welcome to the forums 🙂

I might be able to relate but of course, we have very different experiences. I would encourage you to be kind to yourself. Take small steps and appreciate what you are able to achieve rather than focusing on your flaws (accept them, don't ignore them but also don't dwell on them).

Although I wasn't in a hospital, I was in a crisis stabilization unit for 4 days. After I left I tried a mental health center with a therapist and a nurse practitioner. Now i'm seeing a psychiatrist. It took a long time to find one, so I've gone through 6 med changes in 8 weeks, changes in meds and changes in doses and adding a new med. Are you seeing anyone for help? The world is a scary place. Seek help, keep going. You're worth it.

Good for you, to be strong and look for help. We all need help sometimes. In addition to my psychiatrist, I have a good therapist. I hope you find someone you can connect with. Did the hospital provide any resources for you? I found my therapist when I went to a hospital ER while having a panic attack. Good luck.

No. I have to find one on my own. I see my primary care doctor tomorrow and will ask for a referral.

I keep seeing ads for better help. No idea how good they are. I found a therapist locally, and I have that appointment upcoming. So looking forward to human contact. Maybe having another human on your side will help.

Hello, dear Moonbee, I hope you are always healthy. You are a strong person, and there are many other people who suffer from incurable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, pressure, and heart attacks. Praise be to God. You are in good health, but you have some fears and obsessions. I want you to despise those. Thoughts when they come to you, you have to ignore them. I want you to tell yourself that nothing bad will happen to you. So if it really happened, it would have happened in the previous times, but they are just delusions from the work of Satan. I belong. If you were a Muslim, I would have told you to read some Quranic surahs. The cent and you do not need medical medication. I hope to see you in full health
