i desperately need a new psychiatrist. He doesn't just dispense meds, but I get a real therapy session with him too. I'm not improving, I think he rushes through drugs to fast and says there is only one antidepressant left I haven't taken. He's very conservative and won't use something like ability as an adjunct/mood enhancer to a standard antidepressant like an ssri. If anybody lives in NYC and loves their doctor I'd appreciate it. If they do TMS is a plus. Ive gone through psychology today but didn't want to pick someone at random.
thanks!!

NYC. Some of the best healthcare anywhere. Columbia for psychiatry.

If you want to take a train to CC Philadelphia, Thomas Benfield, affiliated with Jefferson, is a sensational psychopharmacologist. (Psychiatrist specializing in medication. He also does therapy. A kind, intelligent, human being.
I don't live in NYC(I'm outside Philly) so don't have any new doc suggestions but I have had TMS and for me it was a life changer. I became treatment resistant to meds after being on them for decades. Have you had TMS or just looking to receive it? Maybe google TMS near you and they might be able to help you locate a new Psychiatrist. Hope you are able to find a new doctor!
thanks bethelbee, my current doctor does do TMS. I'm actually on my second treatment. The first time did have some benefit but once the treatment stopped, so did the benefit. I'm four weeks in on my second go and nothing
I hope this round of TMS works for you!!! It still may kick in. Took longer my last round. I had 3 rounds, the first 2 each lasted 6 months and the 3rd so far has been about a year. It actually saved my life at one point. Wishing you the best!
I just read someone else's reply about seeing a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I saw one at the last practice where I went and she was awesome. I now see a psychologist a few times a month and the psychiatrist every other month to monitor my Ativan.
I'm in the NYC area but have been unable to find a doc myself. Every time I call a doctor's office I'm told that no new patients are being accepted at this time. It's been like that for almost a year. They all blame the pandemic for the overload of new patients. My previous doctor out of Union City was good but fortunately he lost his own battle with the pandemic. Good luck, hope you find a new one soon.
Oh gosh, I’m so sorry. It’s tough to try to change doctors, you really don’t have much of an idea of what the doctor is really like until you start seeing them. Right now I don’t even see an actual psychiatrist. I see someone who is classified as a nurse practitioner or something like that and he works with a psychiatrist. He has the ability to prescribe medication, but he doesn’t have all the training that a psychiatrist does. He told me he has actually worked in the past at the only one state mental institution Michigan has right now called Caro or something like that. In Michigan there used to be more places like that that were like institutions like Northville Psychiatric Hospital where if you were committed it’s tough to get out of there. Those shut down and Caro is the only place and he told me there is actually some kind of waiting list to get in there. I believe because all of that happened that now we have more of a population becoming totally homeless. Anyhow, back to you. You might want to consider trying someone who is a nurse practitioner that works with a psychiatrist. One doctor recently told me there has become a shortage of people becoming psychiatrists, I guess some people going to med schools just don’t want to get into that profession. I’ve noticed too that a lot of psychiatrists tend to be from foreign countries, not all of them but yes, some of them didn’t even get their degrees in the USA. I go to a community mental health program where I see the doctor once a month along with meeting with a social worker once a month. I know it’s rough going through all of these issues.
Try a psychologist. I see both. My psychiatrist deals with the medications, and my appointment is only 15 minutes. My psychologist sees me for 60 minutes.
Good for you for changing docs, we should never be afraid to fire one that isn't working for us and work with someone who can really help us. You might even interview them first to see if they are a good fit for you before committing to working with them. My last therapist and I set up a timeline with milestones for me to achieve which I found really helpful. I knew he wasn't just looking at me as a meal ticket but had my own best interests in mind. I personally have also found that psychiatrists are lousy at therapy and really are only valuable for prescribing meds and for some of them that is even questionable. My med person is a functional medicine practitioner and takes a healthy balance approach to meds.
my current psychiatrist is good when it comes to therapy, but when it comes to meds he's really conservative. According to him I've gone through every drug except fetzima, an snri. I'm out of options. I REALLY need a new doctor. Preferably one that does tms.
Right now I'm on Cymbalta. And really afraid to go off of it.I can't sleep on it, and I can't use a sleep aid bc once I take my Cymbalta in the morning it immediately puts me back to sleep until 3pm. Sometimes I get headache and tiny bit drowsy in the morning. My dr lowered my dose from 60-30 for the side effects. It put me right back to sleep as if i took a sleep aid the night before. When i took my Cymbalta at night it was so activating and not drowsy so I couldn't sleep. But sometimes it does help my sobbing fits and suicidal Ideation. Ive only been on it two weeks, but I'm so afraid to go off of it. I don't want to wind up worse, especially if my Dr says there's no place left to go. At least I can show up to work. It hasn't helped my depression, anxiety or emotional paralysis/inertia. Last week I was up for 36 hours and had to work. I really don't know what to do. I need a new doctor but I don't want to pick one randomly from the internet like psychology today (none of my Dr's have ever been there)
In case you don't know about it, as you have found out the hard way, finding a med that works for you is a crap shoot and takes a lot of time. I tried a half dozen different meds without success and then did a psychopharmacological test that used my dna to determine which meds were best suited for me genetically. My test was from Genesight and was prescribed by my med person and paid for by my insurance. The interesting thing is that the test showed that none of the meds I had tried before were right for me and I started on one it recommended (Pristiq) which was a different kind of med and it has worked well for me. One thing to also be aware of with meds and anxiety is that our anxious thinking can make us blow things up out of proportion so you need to give a change of meds sufficient time (usually 2 - 3 weeks) to make a difference. Most meds except for meds like benzos are not fast acting. Hope you find what works for you.
ive tried around 22 meds. I know what kind of trial and error it is . Most drugs actually take 4-8 weeks to make a difference. I did the genesight too. All that really tells you is how well you'll tolerate a drug, it's side effects . It's not supposed to show which drugs will work the best
right now,I really need a new doctor, or at least a second opinion.
As someone else said, try Columbia University medical center psychiatry faculty practice. Also, the Psychiatry Faculty Practices of Weill Cornell and NYU Langone. I would just try to get a really good psychiatrist rather than have preconceived notions about what you need. It is also possible that you need a greater emphasis on talking therapy, in addition to medication.
