Depressed and Need Help

I've been struggling with depression for as long as I can remember. My parents had a rough divorce when I was a freshman in high school, and it impacted me more than I should've allowed. Went from a straight A student to barely passing, all because I thought it would hurt my dad. Now, I'm 31, and have for so long felt like I am doing nothing even close to my potential.

I've been dating an incredible woman for nearly two years. The last year hasn't been the easiest for me, and I opened up to her about my depression and thoughts of suicide. To clarify, I never have acted on these thoughts, but they have always been there.

Anyways, she has recently given me an ultimatum to seek help because my depression is affecting her. I don't want to continue to influence her in a negative way, so I am seeking ways to get help for myself. I appreciate any resources that people here have to share. Thank you for reading

BetterHelp might be a good place to start, it's an online therapy that is fairly cheap compared to traditional therapy. I can't say much for the actual therapy, I can't afford it right now, but I've heard people have good results. betterhelp.com/

I'm sorry you're struggling. It's so painful how past events can linger like a malignant tumor. I hope you can find healing and get to a better place.

Hi, well done for seaking help. Therapy can be very helpful, there are apps like Thrive, My Possible Self, and others which are helpful.

Face to face therapy is probably the most helpful, you may find you can access this through your employer, or through your insurance, or pay for it if you can (some places offer reduced rates for those that can't afford the full rate).

Medication can also really help, it can often get you to a place in which you can help yourself more. It would be worth speaking to your doctor.

Vitamin D is also very helpful for seasonal depression, high strength Omega 3 and exercise too.

Xx

Thank you, I will take this all into consideration. I'm currently exploring online resources such as BetterHelp and others but will definitely check out the ones you recommended as well! I am unemployed because of an injury but am on medi cal so will be looking for providers that take that insurance. I'm hoping to use medication only as a last resort. Rather, I intend to throw myself at therapy and am going to actively alter my day to day life for the better.

I really appreciate you taking the time tonight, hope you have a great evening!
