Looking for support for how to improve my appetite as I struggle with moderate anxiety that causes nausea, gagging and vomiting on a daily basis. Most foods do not appeal and I have to force myself to eat. It's another worry on top of many.

Try a different kind of yogurt, not to be confused with flavor. There is cream, Greek, Swedish…those are the milk based. Then there is almond, coconut, cashew….. they all have different smells and tastes.

F&F, (first and foremost) welcome.

Second, are you on any type of anxiety medication?

Finally, what about crackers and water? It may not be much for nutrition, but it may help with keeping food down, until you can slowly move on to better and more nutritious things.

Thank you for the welcome. I am currently withdrawing from medication due to side effects and the medication not working. I am also tapering off Ativan as been taking too long and do not wish to prolong inevitable. I am able to eat fruit, a few crackers, toast. I drink lots of water. My anxiety is moderate with chest tightness, choking sensation and difficulty breathing the top 3. I have anxiety about the anxiety which is really frustrating

I had all these symptoms as i withdrew from Ativan.....its the brain responding through every nerve fibre, for some reason ativan dampens down neural activity...and it takes a while to get back to normality.Look into magnesium as this will relax the body and nerves...i would opt for magnesium threonate or taurate at 400 mg a day....its easier to take this if you make up a mug of hot water...add one capsule amd sip alittle throughout the day.Look into ginger tea...this reduces nausea...i could only eat porridge and boiled eggs for months....lastly see if you can get a low dose melatonin supplement...this helps with sleeping and takes the edge off morning anxiety...the natural way.

Some promising reports on glutamate supplements too...this helps any kind of addiction withdrawal...the brain loves glutamate.

My doctors have not been helpful in regards to my appetite and weight loss. I don't want another prescription. I am concerned to take anything that might interact with my blood pressure drug

in reply todelta50

Try to research the foods and supplements that help with anxiety and depression... these never carry the side effects man made drugs cause... and in most cases work to a certain extent.

I swear I have the same problem. I have been hospitalized 4x in last 2 yrs. They can’t figure out what is causing as all my tests are normal.

I’m so sorry you have this too.

It is scary. My annual physical was great and yet I am not.

It seems impossible to find support/ doctors that we aren’t waiting 3 months to see.

I’m so glad I found this site. Seems we are all going through some very scary issues.

Yes mine is in am and not to be gross but it’s both ends at same time. The doctors have no clue!!! I am not even 90 lbs now. I do have days it doesn’t happen but then I could have a week of it everyday many times a day.

My gastro doctor has no idea or where/who I should see next.

Please keep posted if anyone else gets a factual answer as to what is causing

I get the other end too since not every day but nearly. Have a colonoscopy scheduled for next month.

Usually in the morning but if I smell something bad then it starts the gagging and vomiting no matter the time. If I had any appetite prior, it's now gone

Out of curiosity have you had covid?

Disneybrain profile image
Disneybrain in reply toAdamj

I have not according to all tests. They even did the one that can supposedly tell if you ever had Covid and it stated I had not. However who’s to say how accurate those are.

Yes I had COVID-19 in November of 2021. My anxiety began prior to that when the drug I was taking stopped working

Welcome. You are not alone in this issue. I found that that eating/drinking something in the morning opens up my stomach, gives me some energy and dispels my overnight stomach acid. I think it is trial and error. Perhaps think of some childhood favorites? Perhaps something out of the box like a sweet potato? Hydration is important. I hope this clears up soon.

I feel like this a lot after cancer treatment. Honestly. I use thc to help with my nausea. I'm not sure if that is an option for you. You could also, ask your doc for zofran. It's not for permanent use and will cause constipation, but it's an option. Another trick I use when I just can't eat is putting slimfast in my coffee. It makes it taste like hot chocolate and it at least gives me some vitamins and nutrients.

Welcome, delta50! You will find kindness and support here, and will be able to support others, as well.I went through terrible anxiety and depression last year, and had problems gagging solid food down. I found that a bottle of dark chocolate Ensure was easy to drink and digest when the thought of anything more revolted me!

I was also blessed to have the dear people of this forum. Glad you found us.

Improve your appetite by eating tiny amounts regularly. I think you said you can eat fruit, a couple crackers, toast, and drink water? So, toast and preserves. Clear juice will add a few calories. How about Jell-o? Snack on a little dry cereal? Hard or soft-boiled eggs may be okay. Avoid the yolks if they upset your tummy. If ice cream sounds good, go for it. Maybe some kind of pudding. Rice pudding? Little snacks all day may help your body get used to food.
