My psychiatrist put me on a med called Naltrexone which helps with cravings for alcohol and food and the like. As soon as I started on it my mind started thinking strangely and bit by bit I started getting depressed. Be careful to protect yourself against doctors hearing you say your mind is not feeling right on a med and you are suddenly depressed and wanting you to stay on the med. I’m not staying on this med. maybe he thinks he’s helping me well it actually hurts a lot and now I have to climb out of this.
watch out: My psychiatrist put me on a... - Anxiety and Depre...
watch out
Had it coming off opiates once ,made me sick as a dog
I'm sorry you had this experience but glad you're taking the actions you are. We have to be able to advocate for ourselves.
I was stuck on Paxil for years simply because it was so hard to get off of, it made me feel like a junkie. That was a hard lesson.
I’m on Paxil and other than weight gain it’s done good things for my social anxiety but I starting to kind of wear off … so I got it increased but realize that is for ocd when you hit 60 mg I don’t need that much so cutting back.
You know, my brother worked on the drug study for that. He agreed it wasn't for everybody. You know your body best. As long as you feel you gave it a good shot, get off of it.
Any doctor who doesn’t treat me like a partner is no longer my doctor. Good for you 👍🏼
"Any doctor who doesn’t treat me like a partner is no longer my doctor"
That was literally my first psych of 20 years ago.
He was "the guy" that put me on practically every med, and then gave up on me while being in a med mess.
It was my 2nd psych (which sadly is now retired) that stripped all the meds that my first psych messed up with.
Me too. Now I’m on a med I can’t get off. I got a diagnosis that was popular in the day based on a few questions. I was declined for independent insurance… flat out banned (pre aca if you are US based). It isn’t just psych. I fired a doctor who pushed statin drugs on me every 6 months. Wouldn’t believe I could do it on my own. Now they don’t recommend those drugs for most people and my levels are normal. I “interview “ doctors. Why shouldn’t they expect it? I am basically hiring them! Luckily I have stellar psych dr. Unfortunately I expect she will retire any year and travel the world.
I fully understand this. I feel for you
"which helps with cravings for alcohol"
That's weird, because this is one of the few drugs that I'm not familiar with.
So after looking it up, it's "supposed" to help with getting people off of alcohol.
.
"I’m not staying on this med."
If you're not getting any benefit, AND alcohol cravings, then yeah I'd probably speak up and come up with a plan with my doc/phych for a different med combo.
I was put on Campral to help curb alcohol cravings, they worked really well with very little side effects
I’m glad you advocated for yourself and spoke up, I know meds can react differently to others but I certainly wouldn’t be wanting to be on them listening to your experience
Acamprosate worked better on my alcohol cravings. I think that naltrexone is more of an opiate antagonist.
"Depressed mood" listed right there in side effects. Too many of have doctors who don't respect our experience.
Yeah I’m highly upset because shortly after starting it I told him I’ve gotten depressed and it’s as if he wants bad for me like how would one not see that and why would he want me to stay on it. Fing doctors Even if he thought depressed is better than drinking he should have discussed this with me. This is my brain he’s messing with and I’m tired of all these meds. I’m fing pissed off.
I’m not as upset anymore just depressed
Thanks
