Hello everyone, hope that you're doing well through those difficult circumstances.

I've been diagnosed with a severe social anxiety a week ago. Now I'm trying with my therapist to manage this and work on it. I'll be thankful if you can give me your advices to pass through this step by step.

Hi! I use a white noise app, at night. It also has different sounds, like crashing waves, if you need something to help you sleep (if sounds help you). Wysa is another app that has things on it, to help you relax. I get very anxious at night & these have helped me. I'm glad you have a therapist, to help you. It's great to have someone with you, every step of the way

I’m sorry that you have severe social anxiety. Going out must be really tough. I’m finding that for mine, venting about my annoyances and fears helps. My poor partner hears it all. If there are any strategies that you use or that help you, I’d like to know as well. I experience discomfort with getting to know people on a more intimate level in person. For some reason when people share too many details about themselves in person, my brain goes into overdrive and shuts down and I get really irritated/anxious. I practice detachment with customers at my work so I never get too attached or make assumptions about them but when it comes to coworkers and neighbours, it really overwhelms me. I’d prefer not to know or have them share too much because it feels like half the time they are just trying to tell me what they want me to see of them or an alarm goes off in my body that says run lol it really sucks. I put on a happy face all day and then it gets draining because it shuts out how I’m really feeling.

Hello Mamatired, I can totally understand what you're passing through and it's not easy at all to to always be ready to listen for others what they want you to see in them. It's really overwhelming and I know that because I have this issue and I'm starting to learn how to deal with that. For sure we can help each other and benefit from our experiences to pass through this.

I am glad you have consulted a therapist. Hope you feel better!

Hello Justita, I had social anxiety for years. I couldn't find a therapist near me at the time that specialized in treating social anxiety so I did a self study home program from the Social Anxiety Institute which helped but i continued to have some anxiety. I learned i had an extreme need for control and was perfectionistic, both traits of social anxiety and started working on them. I also realized how wrong my thoughts were about how people were perceiving me. People with S.A. usually have low-self-esteem and low-self-worth and I found the Break Free program by Dr. Bernadette Sewell to be very helpful. Knowing why and how you developed S.A. can be helpful in treating it. Mine came from being bullied in school and growing up in an emotionally repressed home environment. Because of it I developed c-ptsd and worked with a trauma therapist using emdr therapy which has been very helpful. Another very helpful thing was learning to never believe my anxious thoughts and feelings and how to accept them. Watching the videos of Dr. Claire Weekes and reading the DARE Anxiety book and watching their videos has been very helpful for it. I also have benefitted from finding the right antidepressant medication for me and also making sure my hormones, thyroid and adrenals are all functioning properly because they can cause or contribute to anxiety/depression. People with SA are usually very hard on themselves and self-critical and learning self-love, acceptance and compassion for ourselves is critical. My recovery has definitely not been linear but i doubt if anyone's is. Hope this helps.
