If someone is struggling with their mental health, what do I say? (Source: Better Help)

The first golden rule is to Say what you see. But what exactly does this mean? It simply means you describe any changes you’ve seen lately. Then, you ask if they’re ok and offer help if needed. Something like,

“I notice you haven’t gone out to lunch or coffee with us for a while. Is everything alright?” Or, “I haven’t seen you in after school activities for a few weeks. Is there anything you’d like to discuss?”

Keep in mind, however, that every person is different and will react differently. Some may be open to talking, others may not. Remember, if someone isn’t quite ready, don’t push or make assumptions. Your job is to simply be a friend and listen when they are.

I’m struggling myself, so how can I be of help to others?

You don’t have to be perfect to be there for someone. No one is. No matter how you’re feeling, make an effort and show you care. How about putting together a care package, fixing a homemade meal or offering to watch their favorite movie? Helping your community is a great way to get your focus off yourself and be selfless.

But how can I tell the difference between the ups and downs of life and something more serious? If you notice your friend is back to normal on the next day, he or she probably just had a temporary slip up. We’re human, and it happens to all of us. But anything that could be crisis related, like self harm, or negative self talk, needs to be taken care of. If you notice a crisis, don’t wait. Get help for your friend from your local emergency services.
