New medication.

Has anyone taken amitriptyline? My doctor put me on a dose of 25mg at bedtime. I looked up the side effects and I’m a little scared to start!

I’m diabetic, have thyroid and depression and anxiety. I’ve recently been having chest/neck/back pain and some of the side effects are making me really nervous to try! I know medications affect everyone differently but it’s be nice to know if someone is taking this and all is ok lol

I’m also wondering if it’s ok to take with Wellbutrin. While I trust my doctor (to an extent) I sometimes wonder about his medication combos 🤔

I'm with you I hate medications. Been subscribed a couple of medicines that were worse getting off of than the problem they were supposed to solve in fact it was sure hell.

I haven’t taken that before, but I have been iffy about my doctor’s suggestions before so I have advice about that

Whenever you pick it up from the pharmacist, ask them all of your questions. They almost all are way more educated and helpful than doctors. They also are usually easier to talk to and nicer lol. I’ve had my pharmacist straight up tell me my doctor was wrong about things before and the pharmacist has always been right 🤷🏼‍♀️

Awesome! I’ll be getting in touch with the pharmacist tomorrow for sure! Thanks so much ❤️

No problem! And if for some reason you have a rude pharmacist lol you can even call other pharmacies and they’ll give you info to ease your mind

hi BEB...

1st off - Laurennnnnnn hit the nail right on the head!!! when it comes to drugs - talk to your pharmacist!! they know FAR MORE than dr's. MANY dr's in fact, are nothing more than parrots for the sales rep's that visit them, and give them free lunches and trips and such.

i'm not saying you have a bad dr - but the pharmaceutical industry is notorious for "buying off" dr's.

.

having said all that - there are definite risks in mixing amitriptyline and wellbutrin (aka: bupropion). mostly the risks involved increased risk of something else happening. you should consult w/ your pharmacist, and take that information, and concerns back to your dr.

if your dr isn't receptive to your concerns and questions... consider looking for a new dr!

i question everything my dr says to me. and we have a discussion. 50% of dr's graduate at the bottom of their class! if they don't encourage questions and discussion - dump 'em like a hot potato.

also - 2nd opinions. when it comes to dr's - even if you have the BEST of the BEST - I always get a 2nd opinion. and a 3rd if they don't agree. (or more as necessary).

.

now - as for amitriptyline - this belongs to a class of anti-depressants known as tricyclic's. this class has been around for MANY decades!! they have shown to be tremendously effective in treating depression, and other issues.

SSRI's (like lexapro, prozac, zoloft) have been (more recently) exposed to be of questionable benefit above exercise!!! this doesn't mean they're not good - but tricyclic's have been shown to be more effective than exercise. there are drawbacks to tricyclic's also - they're not perfect - no drug is. but i saw your age in your profile - and tricyclic's are generally safe for someone of your age especially when used in periodic spans... (ie: for 3 months or so). there are other concerns with long term use of these drugs.

.

as for concerns with your other conditions - i don't have any knowledge right off the top of my head - so this takes me back to checking with a pharmacist, and a 2nd opinion from another dr.

Hello I’m Andy. I’ve been on Amitriptyline for so many years. 10mg morning, 25mg afternoon and 25mg bedtime. I’m a big lad and they can knock the legs from underneath you. Mine is for pain management. So please talk to your G.P about all your worries and concerns. You are in charge so ask.

There is a risk with all meds interacting, but with these 2 meds it can cause seizures. So treble check.

Interestingly Amitriptyline is typically given to children to prevent bed wetting. Fact for the day.

Take good care of yourself.

If you Google Drug Interaction Checker you will find a website that lets you check the compatibility of various medications. Yes, Amitriptyline is a very effective med and as it has been around since the 1980s no unpleasant surprises. I took 3 x 25mg tablets a day for years, no major side effects. Dry mouth, weight gain and ability to sleep well the only things I noticed.

Hi, I took amytrip'10mg at night for chronic pain, for a couple of years and stopped when I heard about the dementia risk. I stopped suddenly - please don't do that! The withdrawal was terrible.4? Years later I'm back on it again (10mg), for pain as I reacted badly to gabapentin and lyrica :(

My body now also reacts badly to ibuprofen and paracetamol so can only take occasionally.

So it's amytriptaline or opiates, not much of a choice!

So a week into amytrip' I've been sleeping properly and my mood is better. I'm also taking sertraline and the combo seems to be ok. But will be having liver function tests more regularly.

And if I stop taking it I will be dropping the dose slowly over at least a couple of months this time!

My partner has taken this for 5 years 100 mg highest dose and loves it! I’m thinking about asking for it myself! Before she had it she wouldn’t even go into a shop and now she goes everywhere. At first it just made her very tired but not anymore.

I would be a bit concerned myself. I take 450 mg of Wellbutrin, but I’ve never taken amitriptyline. Just a cursory glance at the medical literature reveals that amitriptyline can increase toxicity levels of Wellbutrin when taken together.

My psychiatrist is board certified and actually is one of the doctors who facilitates testing whereby other psychiatrists become board certified. He’s never once mentioned amitriptyline to me, and we’ve been discussing medication options for 8 years. I’m on Klonpin, Buspar, Sertraline, and Wellbutrin for depression and anxiety.

I would definitely ask your pharmacist about potential increase of Wellbutrin toxicity when combined with amitriptyline. Good luck! ❤️

I got in touch with my doctor and pharmacist and both said it was fine. I started taking the medication and I am pleasantly surprised at how much better I am already feeling.

Also, thank you for your post 😊

I’m on a low dose (25mg a day) which I take at nighttime and I take my Wellbutrin in the morning. So far, so good. My pharmacist seems to think there’s no major cause for concerns but did tell me if I felt off or something wasn’t right to contact my doctor or head to the ER.

That’s great news that you’re feeling better already! And I imagine taking one in the morning and the other at night helps decrease any potential interactions. Hoping that this combination really works for you. Sending peace and light and strength. ❤️
