Disability Denied

I suffer from major depressive disorder and extreme anxiety. I was fired from my last two jobs because I wasn't performing well due to my condition. I applied for Social Security Disability because I don't believe I can work ANY job due to my mental condition. My application for disability was denied. Social Security did not think my condition was severe enough and that they believed that I could work at some type of job - something less stressful. My anxiety and depression is very bad and have trouble just dealing with even minor things such as taking care of myself, practicing good hygiene, socializing with others, etc. I know that I cannot work at any job. Has anybody else here applied for Social Security Disability for mental illness and been denied?

Yes. I have been diagnosed with Bipolar 1 disorder, ocd, and generalized anxiety disorder. I’ve been hospitalized twice for manic episodes, and yet, I was told the same thing. My condition isn’t considered severe enough. I applied after both of my inpatient stays, and was denied both times.

You can file again. I know people that were denied the first time. The second time around they were granted disability

Do you have good medical documentation?

Have someone else fill out a report about your poor mental health. That's what I did and it worked.

I was denied earlier this year and appealed twice with the same result. I'm considering opening up a new claim, but I think that it might be just a waste of time. Social Security seems to take very narrow view that people apply for SSDI because they cannot find a job with no regard for how a person's mental health factors into it. Bureaucracy at its worse!
