Reaching out

Hi everyone. I’m new to this group and joined today hoping I would find some support. The last few months of my life have been the hardest I have ever gone through. My husband is deployed, and even though this is not his first deployment, it has by far been the hardest for me. I think because of COVID mostly, not being able to get out and do things. I was working, but the stress of my job on top of everything else caused me to resign for my mental health. It’s a lot of things, honestly, but those are the big ones. I have no support system (or a very weak one at best), so I’m here in the hopes of making connections and finding my way through this. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the group x

Interesting name, did you used to be a mountain climber?

Not a climber, just a trekker. And the Himalayas are my happiest memory. 😌

Sounds like a very interesting life - you've travelled a lot then?

I guess you could say I’ve done a good bit. Do you enjoy traveling?

Used to - but - within the UK!!

Can't travel far now. Can't travel on public transport. Never flown anywhere.

Traveling is a passion of mine. Or at least it used to be, before everywhere became so crowded with tourism. I’ve even been to the UK, which I loved! Currently I live isolated in a desert town with crazy bad COVID. That has been hard. I feel trapped here.

Sorry you feel trapped, given your passion for traveling that must be really hard. Must be difficult for you both.

Hi! Welcome to the group, I am new too. I’ve been out of work for about a month now and I’m not looking forward to going back. When I left on a vacation/leave my anxiety and depression was at an all time high. I really like your screen name. I like to travel but I’ve never been to Nepal.

Welcome to you too! I think this is a hard time for a lot of people, especially with COVID and many of us feeling locked down and isolated. Where is your favorite place to travel?

schone_seele profile image

I think Germany. I love hiking through the villages and the scenic trails.

Germany is where I grew up and I totally love and miss hiking there. ☺️

Do you have to move around a lot with your husband? Does that enable you to travel more?

DreamingofNepal profile image
DreamingofNepal in reply toschone_seele

We do move a lot. Some places we’ve lived, like Europe and Korea, make traveling very easy. Other places, like where I live currently, are very isolated and that makes it harder. I also grew up in the military so I have been able to travel most of my life. I’ve been fortunate in that regard, but the trade offs of military life can often overshadow the perks. Like a year long deployment during a pandemic, for instance... 😕

I’m sorry! I know it has to be hard, especially during the pandemic when you’re expected to quarantine. I dated a guy who was in the army back in 2000/2001 and it sucked when he got deployed to Afghanistan and I couldn’t talk to him for like forever and he was gone forever. I don’t get to travel so much now as I have to work and they only like to give vacation like a week or two at a time. Plus now I worry a bit about traveling alone as a single woman.

Pre-COVID, I would take cruises alone sometimes to get a break from the kids. Cruises are not for everyone, but they’re a safe way for a female to travel alone. You’re always in a group and accounted for, even when sightseeing! Plus I’d quickly make friends with other solo travelers and we would hang out together. Maybe once this pandemic is past, and you’re feeling adventurous, you could go!
