CBT for anxiety and depression

Hi, I’m new to this forum and I have been dealing with anxiety and depression since around age 20 and I’m now 62. Over the years, I have been on several different medications, which helped to an extent, but wasn’t a cure, and now my doctor wants me to try Cognitions behavioral therapy. I’m not sure at my age, that I will be able to change my thinking patterns enough to relieve anxiety/depression. Has anyone made significant progress using CBT? I have read many books on it over the years, and it seems to make sense, but I’m a little skeptical.

I’ve met many people that have said it helped. Also Being taught from a good therapist you can connect with can do wonders managing anxiety and depression.

I think if you get a therapist you like you may get some benefit from it. I'm like you up in age and have tried therapy several times over the years but never stuck with it long enough, but I just found a new therapist who I like so I'm going to give it a try again. Best of luck to you.

Hi,

I have tried Cognitions behavioral therapy, well at least I attempted to. With my driving OCD, and I will say the more I practiced I did feel some sort of relief. However, I let my fear get the best of me and stopped. I am trying to get back to it once again. I don't think age is a factor, if you believe it you can achieve it. Ha, sorry cheesy line. But I will say give it your all, what do you have to lose, except your fear.

I too have tried alot of books regarding CBT however I found the most effective was putting it into action.

Read Essential Help for Your Nerves by Dr Claire Weekes. Then read it again until you understand how anxiety plays tricks on the mind, magnifies every emotion, creates anxious thoughts [that wouldn’t be there if you didnt have anxiety] and practice the 4 principles that she teaches. By learning how anxiety affects the mind and body and accepting the symptoms, you lose your fear of them and they will all gradually disappear.

It doesn’t matter how old you are or how long you may have been suffering. Your mind and body is waiting to recover.

Thanks, I will check into that book for sure. I have read numerous books throughout the years and I have gained a lot of insight and understanding about anxiety, but yet continue to struggle with it.

I have had some luck with Fisher Wallace device. It is a device that you place on your head and adjust the intesity. There are special prices with some codes. Google the device and read about it.
