retirement slump

I’m new to this site. I’ve been on medication for years for depression and anxiety. Thankfully, I’ve been functional throughout. But I recently retired and have had trouble adjusting to the lack of structure. People say “find your passion” but that has been a difficult search for me. I’m in my head way too much, especially with the present stay at home mandate. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I understand where you’re coming from. It’s hard to get out of my own head as well. I’ve noticed what works for me, is taking care of something. Whether it’s a plant, dog, babysitting, even just maintaining the house clean. Feeling like something needs me to be there for it gets me out of my own head if that makes sense.

That makes total sense. Thanks.

Good morning, I had a breakdown four years ago at age 62 when I had to stop working due to health issues & admitted myself for two weeks. When I got out of the hospital I became extremely proactive to find different ways to get busy; I'm a people person & suddenly found myself living alone for the first time in my life. Anyway, I took all kinds of classes at a senior citizen center & made friends there; I went walking at a local park as often as I could, & I found a group of mostly seniors who get together every Wed to chat, play games, do crafts, eat snacks & then eat lunch. Eventually I became part of the crew that prepares the snacks & lunch & does the cleanup & my closest friends are now the other four girls on the crew. A speaker came to talk about a training program called Legacy Link that is funded by the Office for Aging, & I have been working part time in an office since then. The hours bounce around from 15 to 29 per week & only pays minimum wage, but it gives me structure, friendship, & at least $400 extra a month. Always keep looking for groups to try out; go online & look for senior activities in your area & check out your local newspaper. Volunteering at a senior facility or nursing home or even a local hospital is both rewarding & mentally fulfilling. Good luck.
