Help Getting Up and Active

Hi all, I am wondering what you have done to help get yourselves more active in terms of working out? I used to be incredibly athletic, and now my funk (years of funk) seriously impedes both my ability and willingness to get up and be active.

Trying a new activity helps me better about getting going. Like if I try swimming after not swimming for months/years then I will beat myself up about how slow I am and how I have no endurance... but if I try something like tai chi, then I don’t have a baseline or expectation to hold myself to. Learning something new helps me listen to my body, and I become more aware of improvements. It builds confidence enough for me to keep my motivation going.

I make it my first goal of the day, because personally if I wait until afternoon/evening then I give myself room for excuses.

Start small and cheap. I don’t know what you’re capable of but try walking for 15-20 mins 3x a week. When you want to add some more work try stairs or calf raises, squats or lunges. Or you could extend your walks to 30 mins. After the first or second week reward yourself with a scenic stroll around a local park. Look for birds, or try to identify different plants. Take in the landscape, admire the changing colors of the season.

If you find yourself bored or making excuses, then change it up. On the days I don’t want to do anything I try to commit myself to 15 mins. There are so many free fitness videos on YouTube.

If the intensity is too much then look for an intro video. You don’t have to do everything that they do in the video, just try and see what works for you. Then focus on that, the rest will come.

You can do it!

My health issues didn’t help. I do calisthenics in bed every day. I’m ready to go back to the gym. I was always worried about a blood clot so I moved but I do more now that people are going to see this gut in public. Lol

Best of luck to you. I’d love to know how you get on.

I found yoga to be amazing. I can’t afford actual classes and I have social anxiety so I started with yoga with Adrienne on YouTube and eventually found the Holy Yoga foundation online and became an instructor through an online (mostly) basis. In the end I met other people on similar journeys.

I find having a gym buddy really motivating, because even on days when you realllly don’t want to work out, you also won’t want to disappoint your friend, so you’ll probably go anyways. Then once you’re there it’s not so bad! Usually just getting yourself t actually go to the gym is the hardest part, having a gym buddy can help with that.
