What do I tell my boss?

Hi. My first ECT is scheduled. I am not supposed to work for at least the first 2 weeks. Any thoughts on what I can tell my boss when I don’t want her to know the truth? I’m panicking about this..

Hi.

Can you speak to whoever organised the ECT to discuss the issue of what you say to work..they may have suggestions...they will possibly have come across this problem before for others...

Very good suggestion. I'm sure they have some suggestions. Or simply say that you need some leave due to having a medical procedure. If they ask, respond its personal and I'd rather not discuss it and supply a letter from the dr. I wish you well.

Or failing that what about a chat to Mind the mental health charity on the telephone around your concerns in connection with your employer....if your in uk

I’m in the US but thanks. That is a good idea to ask the ECT nurse. She’s supposed to call tomorrow to go over details.

Hi.

Yes it is , I’m sure she will have come across this with others who have to inform work, when you tell her your concerns.

Good luck ! I wish you well x

How about requesting leave under FMLA. It is for more than maternity leave

I don’t have that kind of job — I’m a yoga instructor so am considered an independent contractor. So that’s a worry — if I’m not working, I’m not making money!

Yes there are quite a few stipulations for FMLA. However, I feel that if you use a blanket terms, like writing a letter or email stating you require 2 weeks off due to a medical issue, most employers will be too afraid of violating employee privacy protections to inquire further.

I really like All_alone's reply. Your supervisor should not ask you what your medical problem is (if he/she is properly trained in human relations issues). I look forward to hearing your ECT experience if you feel comfortable sharing.

Do you live in the USA? All you have to do is give them a letter from your doctor saying that you require medical treatment for which you Need time off to recuperate. That's All they need to know. I've dealt with these situations many times and had no problem with my employer. So calm down

Hi nicetry....that is fabulous news!

Now about work 😉

Tell her that you're having a medical procedure and you need 2 weeks off. If your doctor could provide a medical note stating the dates you require off, that would be ideal. She'll of course ask what your having done, so tell her it's something you don't feel comfortable telling for now. Perhaps, you'll share with her in the future.

I wish you all the best and that you have great results.

Hugs,

Marie

I don't know what you will tell your boss but it took me almost 3 months to think right. I ended up in another state without even remembering drive there.

Good luck

Yikes! I hope the benefits outweigh the risks for me.

Believe me I have. This is something that’s been on the table all year, and part of the reason I didn’t do it sooner was bc I was scared of side effects. Still am. But I have been suicidally depressed for so long I’m willing to take a chance.

Maybe just tell her you are having treatment for a medical condition and will be out for two weeks? It's not lying, but it's not oversharing with someone who might not understand either. Sending love.
