Private therapy??

Hello everyone,

It’s been a while since I last made a post but I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Recently, my boyfriend and I had an argument over my mental health. He was very brutally honest with me and told me “you’re not normal and get some help”. I thought this was very insensitive for him to say that and it really upset me. He later said that it’s because he’s frustrated and feels like I keep telling him how I feel in terms of my anxiety and I’m not doing anything about it.

I’ve let this feeling manifest for too long and I feel as though I haven’t done enough to help myself. Although I’ve self referred myself to the local services, appointments take up to 6 months! Therefore I’ve decided to go private and found someone who may be able to offer me help. I don’t know what to expect from private sessions like these so if anyone has any experiences or advice they would like to share then please feel free! Thank you

They will probably do an introductory session where you describe what you think your issues with anxiety are, and usually they will diagnose you then e.g. anxiety disorder or not. This is usually important for insurance purposes, though I'm not sure how it is where you are.

After that, you will decide whether to see them again, and how often.

They may have suggestions of things to try between sessions, and then next time you meet, you can talk about how you think it went.

I often take notes between sessions, and then send these to my therapist. I think it makes things easier for me to keep track of.

I hope this sort of helps answer your question!

Here goes! I've been in private therapy since I attempted suicide in August, last year. The sessions started out with what brought me to suicide, then moved on to how to cope with becoming overwhelmed and anxious. We decided Cognitive Behavorial Therapy was the best therapy route. I know what caused depression, I really wanted to learn how to deal with it. Rehashing the past only caused more depression for me. (I'd tried therapy before, rehashing the traumatic cause. It only made things worse for me.) The questions asked were gentle, and didn't go past where I wanted to go. I find the sessions refreshing and exciting. Each time I have something new to try. I am in monthly sessions now and will soon be ending. I now know how to deal with any new problems as they arise. I am in a VERY stressful period right now, but have been able to deal with it now much better than I would have in the past. In fact, this period is about the worst I've ever had and would have broken before now if I hadn't had the therapy.

Go for private therapy. There is much to be gained.
