Sharing my experience with anxiety during handover 🥲

I recently did a handover in front of 8 staff members, and during it, I noticed my hands shaking while scrolling on the laptop. It was clear that I was experiencing tremors due to anxiety. In the moment, I decided to acknowledge it by briefly mentioning to the group that I was feeling a bit anxious.

Though it was difficult, I managed to push through and complete the handover successfully. While I was relieved afterward, I realized that constantly acknowledging my anxiety might not be the best long-term approach.

I’ve been thinking about how to handle these situations going forward, without always needing to draw attention to my nervousness. I plan to practice some techniques like grounding, deep breathing, and focusing more on the task at hand rather than on my anxiety.

I’m sharing this experience because I know many of us deal with similar feelings. If anyone has any techniques or strategies that help you manage anxiety, especially in situations like handovers, I’d love to hear them!

Greenland's

Was handover something you do around coworkers that you are close to? You could always make a little joke about it if they are peers. I wouldn't do it with a management team.

It's good you managed to get through it

“I tend to be a bit of an introvert and usually feel more comfortable getting friendly with people I know well. Since I’m in the UK now, I sometimes find it hard to catch the humor or jokes, which makes it a bit challenging for me to connect with others.”

I'm confused why your reply is in quotes?

I can't understand the accent over there. I have to try and lip read and turn my phone up.

Is it the accent that is hard for you?

There is a good book by Susan Jeffers, titled "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway." Although anxiety for me is an ongoing battle, that was a helpful book for me. Best of luck to you.

May I recommend a book called Dare by Barry McDonagh. If you don't want to read there's an app called Dare as well were you can listen to audios. And YouTube videos.

I get anticipatory anxiety about giving speeches. It's the worst up until the moment. Once I start reading off my cue cards or paper, I'm okay. I guess because my attention is squarely focused on the speech. And doing the appropriate looking up from my paper or cards to let the audience see my face. I used to be gotten on that by teachers..."Show your face while reading, Miss Girl. Don't hide behind the paper, Miss Girl. Project, miss Girl" ugh 😩

Not what you're looking for?
