Vitamins/Supplements: What are some... - Anxiety and Depre...
Vitamins/Supplements
Rhodiola works for a lot people but you can't mix it with prescription drugs. St. John's Wort is another one. In Germany St. John's Wort is #1 herb for depression and anxiety. Taurine and Theanine - two very potent amino acids for brain.
Hey I take 5-HTP supplements that I got from Holland & Barrett. Just a 50mg tablet before I go to bed and I've only been taking it a few months but I really have felt a difference. That may be a placebo effect or whatever but whenever I forget to take it, I feel awful. I don't sleep and I feel like I'm in a constant state of panic and the anxiety gets a lot worse so it does help me a lot!
If you have Netflix watch "Adam Ruins Everything" about vitamins (and all the other episodes too.
My opinion is it's a multi billion dollar fraud...
I understand that view on multivitamins for sure- there’s rarely enough in them to do much of anything. But for those who have severe deficiencies, vitamins in supplement form are indeed very effective and important. Blood levels don’t lie, when a vitamin taken for a deficiency raises them effectively and symptoms improve or abate.
I suggest highly that anyone taking a fat soluble vitamin or mineral (vitamin D, iron) gets their levels checked to ensure they aren’t taking things they do not need.
I use Rhodiola as well and its been helping me a lot. There's also Velvet bean which my brother claims it works pretty well. St. John's Wort is most popular but there's apparently some side effects to it.
While I do agree that the vitamin and supplement industry is crazy messed up, you should do some research into the substances and where you get them from. Most of the time, our body's kidneys just excrete most of the vitamins we take. HOWEVER! Look at scientific journals with research on Rhodiola. One study was done with patients who had no idea if they were taking a placebo or the actual rhodiola supplement. Those of the rhodiola group had significant improvements but the placebo group didn't. If I find the study, I'll link it down below, Perhaps this substance is more readily absorbed by the body compared to others. It's really interesting.
Also, be sure that the supplements you get are accredited by NSF or USP! (Other companies use placebos) Stay informed, I hope this helps !
B12. For sure. I’m on the shots and sublingual- I have an autoimmune disorder called Pernicious Anemia that prevents me from absorbing B12 properly- but the sublinguals were still very effective for the anxiety I had caused by this deficiency. It’s actually very common to have a deficiency. B12 is amazing!
I’m taking something called Anxiety-T for anxiety. It seems to be helping. You can get it online or at the Vitamin Shoppe. I take Sleep Time, Sleep Select, Calm PC for sleep. I go to a nutritionist who helps me figure out what I need. I can’t do meds anymore. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to PM me
D - The 1st question I need to ask is - how do you define normal? Notice the word - YOU! Give it some thought if you need to - take some time with the question. In fact - sit down with a piece of paper and pencil and just write whatever comes to mind. Let go of all your fear's, worries and anxieties for a few moments and just write. You can have them back later, if you want.
I recently asked this question on the site and received many helpful responses. We are all unique individuals and as such our body chemistry is unique to each of us. As such I can only share with you my experience:
I have been working on this for a number of year's - experimenting with different product's until I finally found product's that work for me. You may need to do the same - experiment. Contrary to the world we live in.
My 1st suggestion would be to go to Natural News.
2nd - Attempt to stay away from any supplement ending in di - ate - ide and HCL. They are synthetic and chemical based which the body can not absorb. Attempt to go organic and natural. Though The Synergy Company is a good company to work with, I have a hard time taking tablet's.
As a result - for nutritional support - I have been taking a combination of: Stabilized Rice Bran by Nutra Bio available at Amazon - at half the amount. Greens Plus Advanced Multi Vanilla Chia available at Vitacost. Blessed Herbs Superfood Bio Blend available at Blessed Herbs and Bluebonnet's Brewer's Yeast Powder available at Vitacost at half dose, which has additional B vitamin's and Amino Acid's and does not come from the traditional brewer's yeast after fermentation. All of which are powder's, which I mix with Motts Natural Apple Juice.
Cost factor - around $100 a month. Which I figure is worth the expense as I have regained energy and feel better.
As I do not do well on medication's for anxiety and depression - they send me into an acid/LSD trip - from what I remember of commercial's of year's ago and do not want to be on. In there place there are a number of product's on the market. Though I would stay away from St John's Wort as it can be highly toxic to some people.
One product is called "Pure Calm" available from Native Remedies - along with other product's - most of which are liquid.
Other liquid's available are from Nature's Answer - which include Valerian, Lavender,Rhodiola rosea, Chamomile, Passionflower, Lemon Balm and Motherwort. Which I combine and usually carry with me and take when I feel like I am being overwhelmed.
In addition to the powdered drink mentioned above - I also take 5-HTP by Now - 100mg -by Now at bedtime, which I get from Vitacost. In the morning I take GABA - 500mg - also by Now. And at time's L-Theanine - 100mg also by Now.
Lastly - I have a wonderful therapist to work with and just the sound of her voice calm's me down. As a result she recently recorded a meditation for me. Maybe you can find someone to do the same for you.
D - I know this is long. As I know your medical condition is different from mine and everyone else's. So experiment until you find something that work's for you.
In the meantime know - really know - that you have and are taking the two most important step's - which are breathing and reaching out for help.
Continue to take care of yourself -
After having an extremely tough time for a few weeks as I prepare (emotionally more than anything else) myself to try to help the ADA get a confession via recorded phone call from my attacker before arrest; I had a bit of a 'breakdown' - I suppose. I was self harming and very anxious and aware that PTSD was now a part of my multiple diagnoses. I had to reach out to my therapist, who I trust, because I was becoming suicidal and she strongly suggested I self-admit. Luckily there is a new hospital in my area getting great reviews and I felt my agoraphobia/ issues with confinement might be worth trying to save what could become a worsening illness.
I tell you all of this because I had begun taking St. John's, Valerian Root, Vitamin D, and also a product a friend of mine sells (which I won't mention because many people sell it as a MLM, home based 'career/ job' and I don't want to upset anyone).
When I went in-patient I turned in all of the meds I was taking both over the counter and otherwise. I had two gallon-sized bags full of substances.
I was checked in to my ward and given my physical assessment, checked for bruises and wounds, and then the clothing and other items I brought in were examined for appropriateness to see if I could keep them on the ward. Some of my things had to be kept in a locker and I would have to request those when I needed them (hairbrush, shampoo/conditioner, chapstick, feminine products, and if I wanted my own deodorant or makeup I would have to get my dr to write a script - same with my weighted blanket. But I have been hospitalized before and each have their own rules and most shifts and nurses and techs are inconsistent.
All of that went pretty expectantly, but then my meds came up after inspection by the pharmacist. The med nurse called me over and told me that the pharmacist said I "was poisoning myself" at best. At worst, "I was attempting to end my life as frequently as I was taking these non-prescribed medications". Of course, I told her they were all over the counter (the meds she was ref. to were the vitamins - all of the ones that were not prescribed by my (PHP) Med Dr., Psych Dr., Neuro Dr., Neuropsychologist, or Rheumatologist.
She looked at me like I was stupid and asked if I had read the drug interactions on all of my prescriptions; and also - have I not heard that NO vitamins nor energy products claiming to heal, or replace cells, regenerate, etc are regulated by the FDA and can't be labeled as a medication or remedy without breaking the law? (I actually did know that after the whole Herbalife scam). So I officially am not to take anything without direct permission from my Dr. who has since given me prescription for Ibuprofen and Vitamin D.
I'm not nearly as shaky now!
I’ve heard magnesium is good! I take b vitamins
