Hi Jacqueline, I can relate to what you are describing. I am not sure I have any suggestions. I am still struggling. Maybe someone will share his story of success.
I will disagree with wanna change. Its not just something that begins in childhood and its not only precipitated by drugs and alcohol. Nothing has to happen to a person to experience this. Its anxiety caused by one having an irrational fear that something bad will happen. I do experience this and it started in adulthood when I was in law enforcement in bad high crime areas of Chicago. I'm paranoid that something bad will happen. I treat it like all the other panic attacks...grounding deep breathing and talking it out.
I get physically sick when I have to leave my house. I am not afraid of people, and am able to interact well once I am where I am going. But I avoid it because I get sick. My DR says that it is agoraphobia, even though I am OK in a crowd, and says that the GI symptoms are really panic attacks. His prescription? Go out anyway, until I am used to it.
