Fed up with medications

dreamreel profile image
21 Replies

I have tried nearly every medication for anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. Today I see my doctor, and will need to bite my tongue to avoid yelling, “what is wrong with me?! “

I am exhausted (blood results show I am healthy)

I am always anxious and have panic attacks

I am depressed and have zero pleasure in what I used to love.

I would love an alternative to meds because I think switching them so often has exacerbated my condition

I'm going to try CBD oil....I have read it does help some people with anxiety and depression.

Faux,

After you have been using it for a while, please share your thoughts on effectiveness.

I will....it is a bit expensive....but what I have read, it is really promising....what caught my eye was a story of a little girl with drug resistant epilepsy, using CBD oil, and it was the break through for further research to advance. Since it has no THC....it has no high...only the benefit of helping with other issues like anxiety and depression. It is 100% legal, because it's not pot, it's one of many cannabinoid's. Being an herbalist...and knowing Marijuana has been used for hundreds of years for it's medicinal qualities, I had always wished I could use it for my depression and the constant nausea I get with my cluster migraines....my only hold back is the THC.

Faux - Is this something you take orally, or apply to your skin? Thanks

okay....hold onto your shorts on this one.....it comes in an oil and you use drops under your tongue....then it also comes in gummy bears.....vaping, there is a pain relief cream, Capsules, Patches, etc. Now the thing is...there is also Hemp oil being sold...but that does not work like the CBD oil.

CBD oil comes in different percentages..5%-10%-15%, you don't want anything under 10% for the effective qualities of it. There are all kinds of company's popping up with this, and many pharmacy's and health food stores are selling it as well because it's legal. Personally,.. I'm going for the sub-lingual oral. From my own experience with various herbal tinctures, teas and creams, I think oral would be best.

Thank you Faux. I will check with my local pharmacy. I am a bit nervous about starting new medicines, so will try a low dose first and see what happens.

make sure if your taking any other prescribed meds. or St. Johns Wort that you talk to your doctor too, I know the CBD oil is pretty inert...where as St. Johns Wort will have reactions to medications.

I feel the same. Have all the side effects and wonder about my neural networks being changed from all the chemistry I had put into my system even for only a short period of time. I have decided to use self soothing psychology, healthy lifestyle and carry Ativan in my pocket for emergencies only. I feel your pain and I think there are alot of us in that situation.

I am a different person. People don’t like me anymore

I'm sorry you feel that way, it hurts when we feel miss-understood, and we do change with depression, we withdraw a bit, are sad a lot, and it's hard for others to understand when we get sick. And we learn to live with this disease...and we can find friends too that understand us, others who suffer here understand that.

there are unfortunately I think as high as 30% of people with anxiety and depression who are drug resistant....

Reading that actually SSRI & SSNRI's only work for 50% of those that take it. No real long term studies done. No blood tests for this and if you had not had a chemical imbalance prior you will when you try to get off of them. Ugh.

withdrawals are certainly a drawback...but I don't get it about wanting to get off them if they are working. I've been on my low dose for years....and can honestly say I just feel better. Like the old sayin; 'if it works, don't fix it'. But it's true that sometimes the side effects are pretty bad for some people...and I can understand not wanting to take them. If I didn't have to...I wouldn't. But I do, so I just live with it. Too much social stigma is attached to having to take medication as well, like if you are on antidepressants it some how defines you or labels you....that's unfortunate for those that SSRI's would help if they don't take them because of that.

The actual medical term for when it stops working for all SSRI's is "Prozac Poop out" Then dosage is increased or changed to another medication. This is a common occurrence for many. Glad it is working for you. I have had so many bad side effects without the desired good outcome to balance it out to make it worthwhile to continue thus far. Finally found a counselor that understands and the seems to be helping a bit too.

I think I have. I was off all for two years long ago when I didn’t have insurance.

Maybe I just need a brain scan

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. Working through different medications is SO HARD. I hope you find something that works and alleviates some of your anxiety and panic attacks. It's exhausting. Do you feel like your doctor is doing all he/she is doing their best to find a solution for you? I worked with one psych for a long time that I felt was just throwing medications at me. Then I found a new one who looks at mental health holistically, and I've worked with her on regulating my sleep, improving my nutrition, getting more active, and trying some natural remedies like essential oils and breathing exercises - all along with meds. The combination of meds plus other stuff seems to be working well for me at the moment. There are lots of great suggestions of alternative things to try here!
