Do self help books work? I get easily discouraged and I worry that if I try to read one I'll just get depressed.
If you know of any good ones that aren't centered around religion, I'll look it up and possibly read it.

Self help books may work if you read them with an open mind. I find using them in a CD form may be easier if you are unable to stay concentrated. Learning all you can about Anxiety and Depression is important. I've never know a book to get you depressed if you read it with a positive mind approach. I see one negative in your post and that is where you say "I'll possibly read it". Books lined up on the bookshelf serve no purpose. Just as pills left in bottles because of fear of taking them, does nothing in helping us go forward.
You never know if that one book or one medication may be the way in helping yourself. Somewhere along the way, we have to believe, we have to trust in the judgment of our doctors as well as ourselves. Good Luck in finding what works for you in getting you to take that first step forward. xx
I'm reading How To Stop Feeling Like Sh*t by Andrea Owen. It is not at all religious and is similar to Cognitive Behavior Therapy in that she addresses 14 types of behaviour, (1 per chapter), what triggers them, how to cope and has optional written exercises at the end of each chapter. The writing style is informal and addresses the reader directly, so it has been much easier to stay engaged in reading this book.
Neat, thanks for the suggestion.
Hi
I found an excellent self help book by Dr. Claire Weeks. I carried it with me for years. It is written as if she were talking to you. Try, you may like it
Thanks
