Did anyone experience childhood abuse and end up dissociating it and go through life with the same energy of distancing self from things so you wouldn't be hurt etc. how does one go about changing this method? Or healing from it. It's hurting me a lot in my adult life but I dont know how to go about changing this mindset/behavior.

Hi Trende,

I am sorry to hear that you have suffered for so long. I am sorry that your ability to find peace and happiness in life has been affected.

Abuse—physical, verbal, or emotional maltreatment—can leave psychological wounds that are harder to heal than bodily injuries.

It seems you have found it challenging to cope with the intense, negative feelings that have bothered you long after the abuse has ended.

Disassociation is one of nature's coping mechanisms.

Distressing memories, anxiety, blocks to intimacy, and trust issues are common.

Many people are able to overcome or minimize challenges like these with the help of a qualified mental health professional such as a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in the subject.

Although based in the US, The Good Therapy organization as some great information in an easy to read format as a starting point in your recovery.
