Close to retirement age...

I have suffered from neck issues as a child. I was always treated with a hot water bottle pressed against my neck and eventually in a few days I would feel better...With that said, let me fast forward to this present day. I have survical and lumbar spondylosis that is taking its toll on my body. I was diagnosed in 2004 with Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)...The pain started in my back and traveled down to my buttocks, into my thigh down to my knee, where the pain was severe and felt like the bones were about to pop out...I could not put pressure on my right leg. I placed my everyday shoulder bag on my right shoulder and could not lift my left leg off the ground. I have tried with doctors involvement, everything from prescribed medication to physical and water therapy. Unable to work due to severe and chronic pain, I am technically homeless. Filing for "Disability" was a joke! They feel that I am able to work. I have in the past placed heat wraps from the bottom of my foot, all the way up my leg and across my shoulders underneath my cloths, just to try and make it through a work day! I want 12 months disability to consistently, at least 4 days a week to build up muscle to strengthen myself so that I can work again until I retire...Is that asking for too much from the government which I have invested in since the age of 14? I've been depressed for over 30 years it seems.

It's not too much to ask. You may have to go back to the doctor to help prove that you cannot work. Keep calling and sending emails to whomever you can - even reach out to your local congressman and see what they can do. The squeaky wheel gets the oil - sometimes you just need to be loud!!! Be loud. Be kind, but be your own advocate. If you have any friends who seem to get their way a lot - call them and ask them to advocate for you. Having a "team" can really help you feel better. Also, call 211 (or go to 211.org) and there are all sorts of community resources that can help - this is for USA.

Hi ChavivLeon, I was told that I would not be a candidate for neck surgery because I have 4 levels of degeneration in my neck. They can only work on 2 at a time and close you back up. The surgeon said I wouldn't be able to look up at the stars anymore if he performed surgery! I don't want anyone cutting on me anywhere!

Please do not work yourself into a wheelchair! Listen to your body and slow it down...retire so that you can do what you want and at your pace. Peace & Blessings to you always!
