Lupron Question.

I have been on Lupron since June 2022. September 2023 Abiraterone and 5mg of prednisone was added. Psa was 19 in Sept and dropped to 1.26 as of Jan. 11 2024. Since going on Abi when I get a monthly Lupron shot I have trouble sleeping that first night and mild flu like symptoms the next day. I have agreed to try the 3 month injection but am concerned the immediate se’s may be worse. I have been thinking about surgical castration but before something so drastic I have decided to ask my MO if he would agree to monitor testosterone and stop Lupron all together to see where the testosterone goes. There have been small studies with adt and Abi and Abi alone with similar results but added that it WAS a small study and larger studies would need to be done before Abi alone could be SOC. Low dose Abi was a small study as well and working quite well for me so maybe my MO will consider it. Anyone out there on Abi alone? If so, what have been your results? Thanks in advance!

Why do you think that SEs are worse with 3 month injections?

I don’t know that they will be. SE’s vary person to person. I remember reading a post where the medication is higher in the bloodstream with the 3 month verses the 1 month for a very short period of time. I have read posts of a guy who was doing monthly and doing well but because they were planning an extended trip to Florida for the winter he did the six month and said he couldn’t even get out of bed. It is something I have been considering. There is always the possibility my reactions have nothing to do with the Lupron. I got both a flu and Covid shot several weeks ago and had a similar experience. Head ache, body aches and congestion. No fever. I am a bit concerned but. I remember reading the SE’s of adt before starting and was petrified. Actually my SE’s are extremely mild and lab numbers are good as well.

Making judgments based on anecdotes you read here is always a very bad idea. There are no differences between the side effects of a monthly shot or a multi-month shot based on the experience of hundreds of men.

I just started having flu like symptoms when I get a Lupron shot. It lasts a couple days. Just started when I started Abi and prednisone. Other than that and a few mild hot flashes I’m doing good.

Tall-Allen….quick question..advanced prostate cancer in lymph nodes…..on Abi/ Pred daily/ Lupron injection every 3 months …working well ..PSA and T ..down very low

Would like to take Viagra but read it will raise T level

I am confused..will the Viagra reverse T drop and increase chances of cancer growth and spread

This could be true based on hundreds of men but there are more than hundreds of men on lupron. Also, of those hundreds of men, how many have tried the 1,3,4 and 6 month injections. If they have not tried all then there is no comparison because each person reacts differently. It would be interesting to know how many guys started and ended with the same dose and if any had problems with the 3,4 or 6 mo. and abandoned without trying the 1 month dose.

The only way we know anything in medicine is when hundreds of men are observed in clinical trials. Granted, there has never been a randomized comparative trial, but there have been prospective trials of similar men at different doses. Putting a few self-selected anecdotes ahead of actual best data is a recipe for disaster. See Tables 2-5:

have had 3 - 3 month lupron injections…so far only issue is pee frequently…..on abiraterone and pred as well…. psa and T have dropped way down so working well and cross fingers it continues

I think it is the ab causing congestion and headaches but not as much recently as I am closely monitoring BP

I am starting my 5th year of ADT treatment. First 2 years I got 6 mo Lupron shots. The last 2 years I have been getting 3 mo shots, and Abirateron/prednisone were added. Did not experience any difference in SE's from either Abi or going from 6 mo -> 3mo

you have 2 years on ab/pred I have4 months with success psa and T very low….do we just stay with it forever as long as T and psa stay down and no impact on liver ?

Yes all 3..seems i will be on all 3 forever or until my PSA and T reverse and start rising

I am on my 3rd 6 month shot of lupron. No problems other than the usual. Midway through my 2nd shot SE actually got better. No abi or prednisone. Gleason 9. PSA at DX 106. No Mets. 1 month after lupron, PSA .47 3 month after IMRT PSA .01

yes 2 abi very early every morning when I am up to pee …then pred later with breakfast

Lupron injection every 3 months

Shocked to be here..urologist said cancer was confined to prostate I needed radiation but On found cancer in lymph nodes…no cure but said the abi will hopefully keep me alive until something else KO’s me…not fun !
