Today I had my 6 monthly diabetes check up, after having blood tests last week. I was diagnosed with type 2 about 7 years ago and for 5 or so years my sugar was all over the place, even with metformin. Then I started walking and watching my diet. I'm by no means a diet freak - I still have a slice of cake or a chocolate bar, (too regularly, I must say!) Since I started walking - and as you guys know, I don't walk long distances - 3500 steps is my usual "long" walk, although I try to do two 10 minute brisk walks daily three times a week. Over the last year and a half of walking my test results have been stabilising. Today I was apprehensive, because since moving home my walking schedule has been sporadic to say the least(!) and I've eaten altogether too many sandwiches. My sugars are completely NORMAL!!! My metformin dose has been reduced to one tablet a day and the doctor says that if the test results are the same at my next check up, I'll be medication free and taken off the diabetic register!?!?! Is it any wonder I'm a walking crusader???
Diabetes under control - weh hey!: Today I had my... - Active 10
Diabetes under control - weh hey!
That's fantastic! I'm constantly amazed by how changes in diet and exercise impact on our bodies! Well done!.
Thanks pollyp1! You are so right! Small changes can lead to massive results. I've been tempted (more than once!) to go back to my old, lazy ways, but you guys keep me motivated! Thanks for the encouragement!
I know that feeling at the moment - since we came back from holiday (19th September!) all I've wanted to do is eat - specifically chocolate (high cocoa content, but none-the-less). It's finally easing off now that I'm back to walking more and have started yoga and running again and I'm definitely a) feeling better for it and b) seeing quick changes in the shape of my body, even if the scales are slower to follow!
Wow. That's fantastic news Kay. Three cheers for this forum!
Absolutely, runswithdogs! Without it I'd most probably still have crazy sugars - and you know, before now I've not done any form of exercise in my entire life! I'd even drive 200m to the local shop! Now I get cabin fever if I don't get out for a few days. I have to champion walking - even the short distances I do have been enough to change my life!
I’m so very happy for you. You’ve encouraged me to keep going with the exercise. Thanks for your post

Oh Wow Kay, well done you, that is excellent news, I am so very pleased for you. Rfc x.
Thanks Rfc - this has been a red letter day for me. I'm starting to reap the rewards for getting out there and changing my lifestyle - I really appreciate the encouragement to keep going!

Hi ,I just want to say how fantastic your achievement is , controlling your type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise. I know from my own experience how hard it is to take charge of yourself and your body, you have demonstrated how perseverance can reap rewards.
Wouldn’t it be great if your GP prescribed walking instead of Metformin?
It absolutely would! Thanks for the good wishes, Helenbach50 - all the best to you on your journey too.
Whooh hooh! 😊
