SECOND BREAST CANCER OPPERATION

Hello all

I ususally post in the thyroid section, but this is another health matter ,id really appreciate some advice on, if anyone is willing to help .

I firstly had breasy cancer in my late 40s nd had a lumpectomy in my left breast, and 5 nodes out , this took three months to heal and then because of the nodes, i didnt feel completly myslef till 5 years later.. However im now 61, and the breast cancer returned with a vengence, and i had a mastectomy, jan 18th 2024, and a further 2 nodes removed, I have a prosthesis, now , which makes me feel- and look a great deal better, and not lop sided, like i do when i have to have a bath, but i have great difficulty accepting that my body looks dreadful now, so i bathe with a t shirt, so i dojnt have to look at what a mess my torso is, i have been having psychological help with this from the hopsital where i had the mastectomy, but this isnt the prob really.. My maon problemb is the constant exhaustion, and weakness , ( ages ago i had two hips replaced- 2015/16) that left my left hip weak as the muscle colapsed, but now i have lost my left breast, and 2 more nodes form my left side- my left side is very weak, i vemanaged to get my left arm working well, except i cant carry anything with it , and i am permanently exhausted - if i go and do one thing, that needs me to exert physical energy , i spend the next two days in bed as i have no energy at all - like im running on empty permanently, I take B vitamins, and my levothyroxine , for my throid , and my statins, as im over 50, - yes getting to old age- 62 in sept, but i hate this permanently being so tired and weak, i cant exercise because of my left hip replacement muscle has wasted, i can do some gardening , I cant run, and i canmt dance, any more - very upsetting , used t love dancing, and now swimming is right out of the question unless i find some sort of swimming costume that has a prosethis or i will look like a monster ! Please could someone help and guide me towards doing something that will give me energy- since the 'c....r, ( my son had it in his testicle too - at the same time- that was a dreadful shock ) ( hes only 32 ) we both eat healthy food, we stay away from processed food, i always have, i reckon it was due to the fact the phone masts have bee put really low down whjere we live, - as many in mvery grateful for anyones y close have c....r !!! and also there was a huge problem with the water being contaminated, which Thames water HID, !!! So now i order spring water, in glass bottles, and we drink tat as i dont trust all the pfas in tap water!!! but id like to know how to get some energy back please - im a pescatarian , my son is a meat eater, but hes lacking in energy.. too- id be very gratefull for anyones advice..

Thankyou

Kind regards to you all

You’re obviously dealing with some very complex health issues..I’m so sorry.

Ideally…I would have thought your GP should be referring you for support regarding some issues..but we all know this doesn’t necessarily happen.

🤔It’s possible..a Pescatarian Diet..has led to vitamin deficiency..it may be linked to your low energy levels. You would need blood tests to find out if there was actually any deficiency.

It’s possible..your Thyroid diagnosis is linked to low energy.

But basically ..not being able to be mobile because of various health problems is probably not helping you psychologically.

🤔Ultimately..you need a serious talk with your GP. Check your Thyroid medication dose is currently accurate. Ask if it’s possible to be referred for ‘any physiotherapy’ relating to your issues.

Thankyou ,Wobblybee, my gp did give me a full blood test , and found he was over medicating my thryroid, took me from 125mgto 10mg levothyroxine , I will never eat meat, i love animals too much , - re pescatarian diet , i dont eat processed foods due to th links with -c....r! I find walking difficult due to the collapsed muscle in myeft hip after surger, ive had all the physio i can and nothings beter, its just become worse due to 20 more nodes out of my ledt side, after the mastectomy - since 2015till now, ive had two hip opps, and mastectomy , i really dont want to go under theknife again, i dont think my body can take it - my lumpectomy was longer ago ! I have done all the physio , id like to try swimming, but been advised you cant when youve had hips replaced,- also would have to find a cosi with a prosthesis , so its sort of out of the question, however i will have a chat when i can get an appointment with mg gp re the energy levels ,, thankyou for taking the time to reply

As far as the breast prosthesis is concerned you can get specific ones for swimming. Can you get an appointment with a prosthetic clinic through your hospital? Where I work even after patients have finished their treatment and are discharged they can come to see the prosthetic specialist.

Dear Clear bear1

I have already seen the prosthesis lady, and as far as im aware they only give you the one, at the hospital im with. i have the one that slipsinto ones bra, which makes me feel a lot better- more normal, ..However i dont know how waterproof it is should i wish to try and swim ?

However i may have to get a special one for this after i have poken to my gp .

thankyou for taking the time to reply

Kind regards

You get one on the nhs but the prosthetic advisor should be able to fit you for a swim one if you pay for it x

There are definitely swimsuits that take a prosthetic. I don't understand why you've been told you can't swim with hip replacement. A close friend of mine had a hip replacement in the spring and has been swimming all summer - she was told to wait for the incision to be fully healed before going in the lake because of risk of infection but that was all - so you might want to recheck about that. I'm 64 and had breast cancer last year, with a lumpectomy. I won't lie - I'm glad I still have my breast, but I do think, as women and a society that we need to get away from the idea that you would look like a "monster ". A mastectomy is an amputation. Do people with a leg or arm amputation look like monsters? My cancer may reoccur, and the future may bring mastectomy to me. If so, I know it will be very difficult, so i know it is easier to say what I am saying than live it. Another option - one I might take myself if in that situation in the future- is to have the other breast removed and go flat. There IS a movement towards this, and books on going flat. Perhaps a balanced torso would feel better? But if this isn't a choice for you, there are definitely prosthetic friendly swimsuits, and i would check again about swimming.

Just to add - at 64 I'm also a pescatarian x 2 years, having been full vegetarian since 18. This IS a healthy diet. Also, I am increasing my exercise since surgery, which is increasing my energy. You do need exercise - find out what you CAN do - as I said above, check out the swimming issue again.

Dear Quilt 2

Thankyou very much for taking the time to reply, i was advised re the swimming that doing breast stroke- re the leg movements involved may dislodge the hips , is why i wasnt allowed, by my surgeon!- However, i will recheck. I have very little energy and have to ind out which is the best thing to take to help my body regain this. i will check the whole swimming issue, again,

Thankyou for taking the time to reply

much appreciated
