Hi, wondering if my mental health struggles are linked to any other health issues. Have suffered with low mood for most my life. I’m 41 yrs, currently on anti depressants but do not want to stay on them. Have a doctors appointment coming up and do not want to be given more anti depressants.

Blood results are low in vitamin D (29 nmol/l) b12 (250 ng/l). It’s it possible thyroid function could be the reason for sustained low moods TSH (2.39) mu/l, T4 9.1 pmol/l?

Thanks

Your vitamin D level is definitely low (anything under 50 nmol/L is considered deficient), and low D is strongly linked to low mood and fatigue. B12 at 250 is also borderline, some people start showing symptoms of deficiency like tiredness, brain fog, and mood changes even at that range

Yes, definitely have those symptoms, for a long time. Also wondering if it could be linked to peri menopause. Thank you ☺️

Do you have the refernce ranges for the thyroid tests? 9.1 seems low, but we'd need to know the range to be sure. Low thyroid is often related to mood, anxiety, depression, and drs learn very little about thyroid disorders unfortunately. And far too many patients are fobbed off with antidepressants

I strongly recommend you get a copy of the full results, with the reference ranges and post them on Health Unlocked Thyroid UK - they are absolutely brilliant there!

Range for T4 is 7.9 - 16. So 9.1 is within the range.

Thank you, will visit the thyroid site. ☺️

Drs often say they're 'in range' or 'satisfactory' or 'normal', but most people need the T4 level to be in the top third or top quarter of the reference range and TSH below 1, or below 2 at the most. Your symptoms do point to underactive thyroid, so ask more advice on the Thyroid UK page and you'll get the best advice

Tip: be gentle with yourself thru peri/menopause. Psych Dr.s rarely address this. I’ve struggled with depression as well and admittedly, peri/menopause was very rough for me. I’m out the other side now, but stay vigilant and put supports in place now so future issues are kept to a minimum.
