Exercise after recovery!

hi all,

Im having trouble deciding weather or not its a good idea to go gym.

Recovering from hip replacement and am able to walk without as much pain as before (still healing). But i am now having the same issues with my left leg that i had with right prior to surgery, which now hinders me from doing normal everyday activities like walking (again!!). I was given the all clear by physio that i can do light training before this problem, but now not sure how to move forward.

The basic exercises i have been following are no longer effecting my fitness or strengthening as I dont feel any progression is happening.

Basically i want to go gym but am a sitting duck till next consult in October! So need advice on best exercises after full hip replacement that arent gonna let my hips go but can actually give me a good overall workout.

Dont really want to wait till October for advice. I have already spoke with my doc who just sent me to physio for left leg, and hospital have not replied to my messages or emails. So kind of stuck on the professional advice side.

Hi there, I’m 49 and also had a hip replacement 2.5 yrs ago. My left one will need doing in the near future also. I am able to walk pretty much pain free until my left one starts to hurt. How long ago did you have the op. The gym staff should be able to guide you with light muscle strengthening exercises. Make sure they are fully informed before you start on any exercise programme.

So it's my understanding that gyms have personal trainers who might be able to help suggest exercises and safely monitor you through your time at the gym and make sure you're doing the exercises safely? That might be of use to you.

And swimming too, it's good for exercises which can strengthen joints without having much impact or weight bearing, which may be helpful for keeping the joint moving without the impact that, say, running would have on your body.

You know how far your body is comfortable with being pushed, and what you're capable of doing.
