Hi there, just looking for some advice really. I had a prolapse repair along with a repair to my perineum on the 2nd September.
I have mainly bed rested since coming out of hospital. I have been prescribed codine (which does nothing) but the pain that shoots down my left bum cheek and into my leg can be excruciating, especially when I need to open my bowels. I have also been prescribed Laxido which I take 1 sachet in the morning and one in the evening.
I am also bleeding red blood daily which I know can happen but also they told me to stop taking my pill so could be the start of another period also.
Anyone who has had this surgery that can offer any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I had colorectal surgery and the laxative made me have severe pain. It caused gas and bloating that put a lot of pressure on the surgical site. Taking 200-800mg of magnesium was much more comfortable (I took more nightly at first). Ibuprofen alternated with Tylenol helped with the pain. I didn't take opiates because of the constipation although they were given to me. The pain was severe anyway after the surgery. A topical lidocaine was approved by my doctor and available here over the counter. I use a peri bottle to clean after bowel movements. Using a sits bath of warm water a few times per day first week or two helped. I had 1 internal hemorrhoid removed in mid may. I was told by my doctors that pain and bleeding can last months. I had bleeding with bowel movements daily for first several weeks and last time it happened was probably late July. It's still painful to have a bowel movement. I think that area can take a long time to heal. It has very gradually gotten much better. So now I'm thinking it will be completely better within a few more months. What does your doctor say about the timeline to completely heal?
You are doing the right thing with the bed rest. I had 2 prolapse repaired and a hysterectomy plus bladder sling 4 months ago and was sent home with discharge papers saying not to bed rest. The papers also said to go back to usual activities but no heavy lifting. At the 2 month mark I could tell something wasn't right. At the 3 month mark I could see the rectocele was back. Now I wish I would have rested in bed and took better care of myself. Really the only advice I can give is to keep doing the bed rest . You could get up every 2 hours and walk around your house. That should prevent any problems such as blood clots.
Hi I had prolapse surgery 2 years ago I went private my gnie repaired both posterier and anterior the op went fine but then I struggled to pass urine that was painful had to go bk into spire...honest as I was healthy 65 yr old young no real health issues ..I thought i should have got over it quickly but honest it took at least 4 months before I felt normal again..infact I wondered if he had made a mistake but he said it all looks good ...so give it time obviously if your still having periods that's different to me ..but if your worried go to your gp and as for a referel good luck x
Thank you all for your comments today, they are appreciated.
I have continued to bed rest this weekend which has been hard with a 12 year old and a 4 year old but they try to understand that mum can’t do what she needs to do.
I have stopped taking any pain killers but still taking the laxido twice a day to prevent straining. Appetite is not there so limiting what I am eating.
Finding it harder with a full on period too which is a lot heavier than I have normally so showering twice a day too.
I have a 3 week sick note and have a work occupational health call towards the end to look at my return to work.
Deserts i can’t believe they told you not to bed rest after that amount of surgery!
Yes, I thought it was crazy too and even Googled it, and some doctors apparently think it's better to get back to your regular activities while others still think bed rest with walking around the house every 2 hours is best. Also I found studies that show which ever you do , bed rest or no bed rest , the final outcome is the same. I just know I plan on doing bed rest if I have repair surgery again. I'm not taking any chances of wrecking my surgery again.
I just wondered how you're getting on 2 weeks after your op?
I'm 33 and due a prolapse repair next month. I have a moderate cystocele and severe rectocele. I was also going to have a tubal ligation at the same time but in 2 minds about that.
I've got 4 kids under 7 so I'm very nervous, my youngest is 21 months old so it's going to be difficult when I'm unable to pick her up for a while.
How is your recovery going so far? If you have any tips on a fast recovery or coping with young kids I'd really appreciate it x
I’m also interested in how your recovery is going/went? I am waiting for a date for posterior repair for rectocele, I know it will be early March sometime. I’m lucky that I don’t have any young kids to care for although I do worry one of my dogs who is quote excitable will jump on me without realising what he has done.
How long was it until you were up and about and when did you return to work? I’ve already been told 6 - 8 weeks off work at least but I am worried about how long it will be until I can get up and about just walking round the house or to the end of the road and back.
