Open Myomectomy

I'm meeting with my surgeon today to discuss my upcoming operation (not keyhole) to remove 7 large fibroids (probably scheduled for Dec/Jan). What sort of questions should I ask the surgeon? I'm feeling a bit blank. Thank you.

I would probably just ask about the process, the likely recovery and any risks. I had an open myomecmtomy many years ago and it was relatively straight forward. Good luck x

I wish I’d asked more about what to expect in the first few days after and recovery time. Also, try not to do too much too soon! You’ll feel like you want to but make sure you take all the time you need to recover properly

You can ask whether you'll have a vertical or horizontal incision. I had a vertical incision to remove a 25 cm fibroid 6 months ago. I was so nervous but the pain was managed and I recovered well. You can also ask what sort of pain relief and stitches they will use.

Good luck

Hi there, I'm waiting fibriod embolization - would you class what your having is the same or is that procedure totally different thanks.

Hi they're not the same. A myomectomy removes the fibroid, embolisation plugs the artery supplying blood to the fibroid, in effect starving it. It doesn't remove it but is supposed to stop it growing larger.

Hi EnnEss, I thought or rather, the way it was explained - fibriod Embolization, scrapes the lining of the womb 🙄 nothing mentioned about arteries being plugged - I have more than one fibriod - doc mentioned, getting rid of two big once and hopefully that would help. I can't have open surgery due to having abhedions attached to my abdomen (scar tissues) left-over from a major op a few years back.

Was told after 2/3 keyhole surgery's they couldn't flush the adhesions out, and were attached like clinfilm to the abdomen wall. The worst sinarios - if the adhesions move and attached themselves to my internal organs, could be life threatening.

Surgical procedures weren't possible for me sadly ie open surgery - I couldn't have a hysterectomy as such so fibriod Embolization was the safer option.

A Myomectomy - is this keyhole surgery???

The scraping procedure you mentioned I think is called Ablation. The artery is where your thigh and trunk meet at least that's where the incision is. I can't remember if I was in overnight or went home the same day. I had about 9 days off work. The first couple of days felt like terrible period pain but other than that everything was fine. As a regular exerciser, I felt it took a few months before my fitness levels returned to normal.

All the best.

Hi EnnEss,

I've tried to reply but think it was too lengthy - I can't have open surgery due to adhesions attached to my abdomen and the ablation was tried without success - when I woke up from day surgery, they told me I was 3x with fibriods and couldn't get the instrument into my womb so it's definitely - fibriod embolization, under a specialist gynaecologist but 3/4 years waiting is sole destroying!

Glad your ecovery was a success!

Thanks & Take care Xx
