New here - hot flashes at night only

Hello all, new here to this group. I am 49 and suspect I've been in menopause for the last 2 years. I cannot be certain as I had a uterine ablation 7 years ago and have not had a period since (thankfully!).

But I have other symptoms, weight gain in a new pattern around the middle, changes in skin, thinning hair on my head but more facial hair. Ugh. And the hot flashes...

I am having hot flashes at night only though - maybe one in the morning after I wake but the rest are only after I fall asleep. I've tried Black Cohosh, DIM, and am currently supplementing with progesterone...but it seems nothing has helped.

I've searched the internet high and low for the physiological reasons behind a hot flash at night only, and have found nothing. Does anyone here have experience with this, or that could possibly point me in the right direction? I would think hotflashes would happen all the time, or at least intermittently at different times of the day. But I have lousy sleep all the time because of this. I wake just before every hot flash - feel it, then try to fall back asleep, over and over.

Anyone have any experience with this and possibly know what makes these only happen at night?

Clabbergirl,

Night sweats can be due to B12 deficiency so it may be worth asking your GP to check B12 and folate.

Folic acid may help menopausal hot flushes.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will look into it. I am willing to try almost anything at this point (that I haven't tried already).

Hi I am 46 and I recently had an hysteroscopy which showed I have thick womb lining which is causing my very heavy and long periods. You mention you had a uterine ablation a couple of years ago- did you have it for this reason . I am waiting to see consultant in September. I am just wondering what he may suggest.A life without periods would be great. I am sorry that I can't offer you any advice on the night sweats xx

Yes, it was due to heavy periods. The ablation was the best thing I could've done - wish I'd done it years before I did.

Hi Joanna I also had an ablation about 8 years ago, would definitely recommend as I had heavy and horrible periods. Was signed off work for week afterwards and then life back to normal.

Yikes, don't have much so it will be a treat for me not the pain part though. Sorry to hear about the ectopic. It's a crazy experience to go through.

Hi all. Seems like everybody's doing well. Sorry to hear about the positive GD test results. I barely passed mine so I'll continue seeing my dietitian. At 25w5d with twins I've only gained ~12 lbs. I had a scare last week. My OB was away and the resident couldn't find the 2nd heartbeat with a Doppler. They sent me to the birthing unit and I waited for nearly two hours to get in and have an ultrasound. All is well fortunately. My babies just seem to dislike getting monitored. The nurse had a hard time getting a solid recording during the NST.
